Ruggers Stub borr BY MARK LEARY Sports Writer Warren Muir put his head down and bolted over the goal line with seconds remaining to insure the Carolina Ruggers of their ninth win of the season, 20 13. Seconds before Muir's tally, a surprisingly strong Clemson team had brought the score very close, as they only trailed by one point after a brillant comeback attempt. Clemson was sporting a 5-2 record going into the contest with the c - Gamecocks. The first half was slow and the action was practically nonexistant until five minutes remained in the half. The sloppy field could have attributed to the poor play as near breaks fell short because of the backs slipping. Burke Hayes finally got the hometown ruggers on the board as he broke away and scam pered 50 yards for a four-point score. The kick after the tally went wide and the score was 4-0. Hayes' score apparently got Carolina moving because before the whistle at the half sounded the Gamecocks scored again. The ball was moved down the field steadily and Jack Clauson fell on it in the end zone for the score. The two-point conversion kick again went wide. The half ended with Carolina out in front by only 8-0. Carolina came out strong in the first few minutes and then got sloppy and overconfident and almost lost the game to a strong comeback attempt put on by the Clemson Ruggers. Bill Black burst away and ran 30 yards to put Carolina in scor ing position. His last-ditch lunge for the goal line fell short and Carolina was two yards from a score. On the next play I,STUD Pizz SPAGI Located, Stop 1 Tigers the scrum walked the ball over for the score. The two-point conversion was good and this made the score 14-0. This is where the Carolina Ruggers felt they had the game won. This attitude is bad in any sport and on this afternoon it proved-almost fatal for the Gamecocks. The Tigers turned around and started to play great ball against the sluggish Gamecocks. Clemson put two trys across and also hit on a 35-yard penalty kick to bring the game within one point 14-13. One of the Tigers' scores was perfectly executed as Brian Smith drib bled the ball around numerous Carolina players before falling on it in the end zone. At this point Muir pulled off his last-minute heroics to win the game for the Gamecocks. Player-coach and captain of the team Dr. Jim Wynn said of the game, "We did not play well at all today even though we came through in the clutch. I would much rather have trounced them like we usually do." Wynn, talking about the Carolina team which is 9-0-1 on the season said, "We of course are preparing for our game with UNC next week on the road and we are also beginning our pre parat-ion for the National Col legiate Rugby Tournament which will be played the fifth and sixth of May."
