'-CM Vol LUI-. o. I nierstyof ouh Croin, Clubia S C.2908Monday,Mrh1,17 Spinazzolo Calls For SG Abolitici BY BLAKE LORICK Gamecock Staff Writer Student Body President David Spinazzolo, called for the abolition of student government in an informal meeting with representatives of the campus news media Friday. "This structure at USC is inadequate and. doesn't take care of students," Spinazzolo said. Student Government should be replaced with University Governance, a legisla tive body composed equally of students, faculty and staff. Spinazzolo proposed a University Governance body as part of his platform when he first ran for president. Hesaid everything he had tried to do this year as president had been aimed toward its establishment, This was the only explanation he gave as to why he did not resign- as president or try to disband student govern ment once he attained office to actively seek implementa tion of University Governance. Spinazzolo also outlined what he felt his administration had accomplished during the past year. Student Government established five main priorities in a meeting last November. They were the City Council elec tion, the Green Street issue, the parking problem, Commun ity Relations and University priorities. Spinazzolo com mented that Green Street, Community relations and park ing problems all had received attention and that solutions had been proposed. Spinazzolo discussed the recent controversy over the use of Student Government offices and phones for City Council candidate Franchot Brown and said, "We got involved in order to set up a direct line of communication with the City. Student government pays for the phones and if we can not get any cooperation from the University, we must take other steps." Green Street's demonstration was held in an effort to show frustrations .of student leadership and. the strength of the student-body to the administration, Spinazzolo said. Harry Hope, a journalism major who does not know his academic status or his grade point ratio said his platform was "to abolish SGA, grab the student money and run." Hope said he was "very serious" about this campaign. He "wants the office because he wants the money and the free liquor." Rita McKinney, a junior journalism major with a 3.4 grade point ratio, advocates switching the Student Gov ernment we have now to a University Governance. Under University Gover nance, three groups of people -students, faculty and staff- are com bined into one legislative body. McKin ney said this form of government gives students a "direct say in the decision making" and a "direct input', into Stu dent Government. She said University Governance had been tried in other universities in the nation and all the results had been favorable. McKinney said this form of government "does not take away any power" from any one group of people; it simply allows the students to participate in the decision making process.
