Balar By JIM HERSH Asst. Sports Editor Wednesday night was unoffi-. cially Kevin Joyce Night at the Coliseum, and when he scored 12 of the first 17 Gamecock points against Duquesne it looked like he might go on a 41-point scoring spree, like he did against Indiana, or at least a 31-point outburst, like against Fbrdham, and blow single handedly the Dukes back to Pittsburgh. But then it seemed like the rest of the team woke up and realized that this was their last game of the year at home, and they might as well go out in style. So instead of getting blown out just by Joyce, Duquesne was battered by a well-balanced attack, 90-77. Five Gamecocks scored in double figures. Alexander English had 11 points and 10 rebounds, Mike Dun leavy had 16, Danny traylor 19 and Kevin Joyce 20. However, the leader of the pack turned out to be Brian Winters, who scored 18 points in the second half, 22 overall. Winters hit most of his shots from the corners of Duques ne's zone, which switched often from a 2-1-2 to a 1-3-1, and came at at most opportune time. The Gamecocks, who won their 20th game of the season, entered the second half with a one-point lead, but increased it quickly to 60-49 in the first six minutes of the half. However, Duquesne coach Red Manning pulled sophomore guard Jack Yun off the bench and the Dukes began to surge. Yun, heretofore a four-point a game man, immediately had a hot hand from the outside over the USC 2-3 zone. For the ten minutes he played in the game Yun'hit eight of 11 from the field for 16 points, and when he fired one in at the 8:16 mark that 11-point Carolina advan tage was only five, 72-67, and Frank McGuire began to think about scraping the zone for a man-to-man to shut off Yun. "We stayed in the zone the whole way," McGuire said after the game, BLOOD DONORS NEEDED! IMMEDIATE CASH PAYMENT Age Limitations, 18-60 NEW HOURS 9:30 a.m. 'lii 5 p.m. Mon.-FrI. We would have come out of it if they had cut the lead to three." McGuire's fear of coming out of the zone was mostly based on the fact that he didn't think the Gamecocks could handle Lionel Billingly one-on-one. "Shutting off Billingy was the big job," McGuire said. "He can move like lightning." Carolina In Tourn By STEVE PARKER Sports Editor Carolina's post-season action begins Saturday March 10 in a 5:10 P.M. CST (4:10 Columbia time) match-up with Texas Tech in the Quarterfinal round of the NCAA Tournament. The contest will mark the third consecutive season that the Gamecocks have participated in the NCAA playoffs, as each of the last two years USC has advanced to the Eastern Regionals. There will be no Eastern Regional play for Carolina this season however, as the NCAA tournament selection com mittee moved the Gamecocks into the Mid-West division for the tour nament. Thus the match-up with Texas Tech, the winner of the Southwestern Conference title with a season record of 19-7. Carolina's victory over Duquesne Wednesday night ended their reg ular campaign with a slate of 20-6. Five of the six teams which handed the Gamecocks a defeat will also be participating in post-season action as Providence, St. John's and Mar quette are in the NCAA's, while Vir ginia Tech and Notre Dame will be in the National Invitation Tourna ment. Although Texas Tech has won 19 games, their schedule was not as difficult as was that of the Vote Marilyn Craw' Treasurer of 1) Precise financial records 2) Better distribution of fun4 3) More cultural activities 8 Come to this Christ' "Todays Search By Florence C. As hot as he was, Yun could not move the Dukes aq y closer than five, and the main reason for that was Winters. He matched baskets with Yun and had 14 points in the last 14 minutes of the game. Tech's most inapres sive affairs were victories over Western Kentucky, Kansas, and Creighton, although Tech's 12 vic tories in conference play help reflect the clutch play of the Raiders. Tech has played in six overtime contests this year, winning four of those. Also the Raiders have taken three of the four one-point thrillers they were involved in this year. Averaging just 71 points an outing as compared to 67 a game for their opponents, the Tech lineup does not flaunt any impressive scoring statistics. The Raiders feature a pattern, ball-control type offense and their emphasis is so much on working for the sure shot that they concluded the season as the second lowest scoring team in their confer ence. The leading scorer for the Raiders is 6-9, freshman center Rich Bullock who averages 13.6 points a game while taking down 7.5 rebounds. Two of the Tech starters were named to the All-Conference team as guard Rich Little, 6-3, and for ward Ron Richardson, 6-10, were so honored, while Bullock was named to the second squad. Unfortunately for Duquesne, Winters was very much in sight Wednesday night. And in addition to his 22 points, Winters had 10 rebounds, high along with English, on the team. Perhaps the point at which the Dukes finally lost all chance to win rs Tech >ener in at 6-4. Guard Don Moore rounds out the starters with a 6.8 mark. William Johnson, who sees fre quent playing time as the sixth man off-the-bench, is the fourth high scorer on the team with an average of 9.9. Johnson is a 6-6, sophomore forward. Carolina enters the first round of the tournament with more impres sive statistics as all five of the star ters for the Carolina squad are averaging in excess of ten points a game. The leading USC scorer, as he has been all season long, is All America guard Kevin Joyce with a 20.8 mark. The winner of the quarterfinal match Saturday will advance to the semi finals in Houston on March 15. The finals will be held in St. Louis March 24-26. They were within seven, 78-71, when Carolina called time to regroup. When the teams returned to the court the crowd went wild and stayed noisy for the rest of the game. Duquesne seemed shook, com mitted a turnover and USC got two quick buckets before Manning called time to calm his team down. By that time there were only five minutes to go and the Gamecocks merely traded points the remainder of the way to seal the win. McGuire was very aware of the crowd noise and thought it undoub tedly was a factor in the game. "The crowd was excellent," he said. "If this crowd was at Notre Dame on Saturday we would have won." Needless to say, the win was an important one for Carolina. Not only was it their 20th of the season, but it gives them momentum going into their NCAA tournament opener Saturday with Texas Tech. "With the freshmen, English and Dunleavy, starting, I didn't think we could win 20 this year," McGuire admitted. "I figured we'd be around 13-13, but we started to play better in New York at the Holiday Festival, even though we did lose to St. John's." And again McGuire cited Winters as the key to the team. "The beginn ing of our success," McGuire, who won his 20th to extend his streak to five straight 20-win seasons, said, "was when Winters started hitting from the outside. That took some of the pressure off Joyce and it left Kevin open more." Statistics FT Reb. Avg. Pts.
