Given to representatives of the chemistry department at a press conference by Richland County Cancer Society mem bers, the grants will be used to finance two projects to aid in cancer research. The first grant, $116,642 is the largest single grant in biochemistry and for cancer inducing chemicals given in the United States by the society for Pharmacy The University of South Carolina College of Pharmacy has received a $75,229 grant from the U. S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare to strengthen its prog ram in clinical pharmacy. The two-year grant, announced December 12 by Dean Julian H. Fincher of the pharmacy school, is ncer re ven to ct 1973-74. It will finance the col laborative efforts of four researchers 'in the chemistry department: Thomas A. Bryson, organic chemist; R. Bruce Dunlap and Ronald R. Fisher, biochemists; and Paul D. Ellis, a physical chemist. Dr. Thomas A. Bryson, who will head the project, said the researchers will study basic biochemical processes of the human body. This study will be directed toward viewing the interactions of coenzymes (small molecules) and emezymes (large molecules). "By knowing the processes between these molecules, we receives H funded through the Health Profes sions Special Project Grant Prog ram and will be used mostly to hire faculty and personnel for an accelerated academic program to shorten the pharmacy degree requirements from a five to a four and a half year program. The facilities these grants will provide will be unique in the United States and probably the world, said Bryson. "Both grants will bring in a new area of equipment and personel into the department," he added. EW grant plished mainly through an expanded summer school program. Dr. Wayne A. Shrader, director of clinical pharmacy at USC, will direct implementation of the grant, assisted by Dr. Brooks C. Metts Jr., also of the pharmacy faculty.
