Sports Editor Virginia Tech returns the ace of last year's attack in the person of superstar Allan Bristow, but the Gobbler team has suffered the loss of the remainder of its full-house. The 6-7 super forward has a lock on that position, but the remaining four spots on the court are up for grabs and quite probably could end up belonging to all new faces. Two junior-college standouts and two others will join Bristow on the play ing surface, but at times it appears as if Bristow could play the game entirely by himself. Bristow averaged 25 points a game as a junior while snatching down 13.4 rebounds. Last season's Gamecocks will testify to the out standing talents he possesses as he hit for 31 points and could have hit the final winning basket for VPI, which Charlie Liscomb missed, had he not fouled out minutes earlier. ng Gifts lossoms n "TIE CORNER" 14 Arcade Mall 1330 Main Street Phone 252-1201 ur new shop - A~ SPECIAL .ome see us, select one or tw 'esent this gift certificate an< pairs. >ur shop and your savings! Bristow kept VPI close throughout and after the game it was apparent that only his absence had prevented the upset result. Despite Bristow's talent, the Gob blers managed only a 16-10 record last year in the first year under Coach Don DeVoe, and Bristow might be able to maintain a record like that on just his own personable abilities. But probably not. And so, whether Bristow realizes it or not in his quest for All-America status the success of the VPI team will rely on the unknown. One blessing for McGuire is that he has plenty of candidates to fill the spots. Along with the eight let terman returning there are two transfers, six sophomores and five freshmen, made eligable by the new NCAA rule. The four starters back are 6-3 guard Allie McGuire, who doubles as captain of the team; 6-3 senior forward George Frazier; junior Larry McNeill, and guard Marcus Washington. $5'| Openi 10 AM-6PM MON .-Sat. JIM BROWN ...moving to pivot ToledoI be one -n BY JIM HERSH Sports Writer Last February Toledo brought a number 19 national ranking with them to the Coliseum. They left with no ranking and a brutal 94-72 beat ing at the hands of the Gamecocks. They'll probably remember that when USC plays at Toledo Feb. 5. From P "If I had to name one player who would start this season it would be Larry McNeill," McGuire said. McGuire is uncertain where the 6-9 McNeill will play, however. He moved from forward to center when All-America Jin Chones eloped to the ABA's New York Nets last sea son, but could move back to forward this year. "Our center spot is a problem." McGuire said. "We have to develop a center. You don't lose a guy that got $1.6 million in his junior year and not feel repercussions for at least two year-s." Other candidates for the center job are 6-10 senior Mike Millas, a reserve, and 6-8 sophomore Maurice Lucas, who averaged 28.6 points and 16.8 rebounds, both Across from USC ROUNDHOUSE FOR CHRIS'i V'isii us fIor finue dIi and1( ji OIWnb a sitI(ln Hyman's j aCe of his unproven teammates, well Bristow is an upturned ace, but the rest of the deck is all face down. f' \ BOBBY NICHOLS ...looking to improve. may still an team The Rockets were an amazingly one-man team last year, and they'll probably be the same this season. McGuire is worried about the guard situation also, although there will be plenty of guards, and talent, available. His two returners, son Al McGuire and Washington are bothered by ailments--McGuire a stamina problem, Washington a knee problem. Backing them up will be 6-4 freshman William Tatum of New York, now eligable for- varsity action. McGuire has called "a black Jerr-y West. I doubt if any of our freshman will break into our top seven, b)ut if anybody has a shot at it, it's Tatum. The frontcourt will b)e bolstered by 6-7 sophomorec Jerry Hloman, a transfer from Detroit, and Rick Campbell and G reg ,Johnson, hothI up from the freshman team. The players are there, but McGuire is looking for something more. "We're going to have to over come inexperience and a tough schedule. 'We're going to have to have some cohesiveness.
