Sports Editor Virginia Tech returns the ace of last year's attack in the person of superstar Allan Bristow, but the Gobbler team has suffered the loss of the remainder of its full-house. The 6-7 super forward has a lock on that position, but the remaining four spots on the court are up for grabs and quite probably could end up belonging to all new faces. Two junior-college standouts and two others will join Bristow on the play ing surface, but at times it appears as if Bristow could play the game entirely by himself. Bristow averaged 25 points a game as a junior while snatching down 13.4 rebounds. Bristow kept VPI close throughout and after the game it was apparent that only his absence had prevented the upset result. Despite Bristow's talent, the Gob blers managed only a 16-10 record last year in the first year under Coach Don DeVoe, and Bristow might be able to maintain a record like that on just his own personable abilities. But probably not. And so, whether Bristow realizes it or not in his quest for All-America status the success of the VPI team will rely on the unknown. The backcourt finds the two junior college transfers 5-11 Bobby Stevens and 6-3 Charlie Thomas. Label the backcourt questionable. The center position finds 6-7 freshman Larry Deakins, lacking some defensive skills, in a battle with 6-5 veteran Craig Lieder that Deakins will probably eventually win. The forward spot opposite Bris tow belongs to two unproven players in sophomore Geof Wiggins or freshman Mike Collins, who at 6-8 enjoys a two-inch height advan tage.
