But Matt Gantt developed quickly, and was able to pick up a good deal of the slack created by Lanier's graduation. But now, Gantt is also gone, and Larry Weise is in somewhat the same predicament he was a few years back. How do you replace the veritable heart of your team? Well Weise has a relatively easy schedule in the early going, and he may need every hour of it to find a player of Gantt's quality. His best choice lies in Carl Jack son, a 6-5 forward who was the Bon nies' second leading rebounder last season, while scoring 17.6 points per game. Jackson's development as an adequate substitute for Gantt could very well decide the success, or lack of it, that St. Bonaventure enjoys this season. At center, Weise is blessed with a good one in 6-9 Glenn Price, who averaged more than 20 points while grabbing 10.6 rebounds per contest. Joining Price and Jackson in the frontcourt will probably be 6-8 strongman Mike Mayurnik, a strong inside performer. Although up front the Bonnies are blessed with experience, height and ability, the backcourt could be a dif ferent story, where Weise will be depending on some speedy, eye At center returns Carolina's 7-0 giant Traylor. With Riker missing Traylor will have to pull in more rebounds and generally dominate the boards for USC. His surround ing forwards are still untested. The big man led in rebounding last year with a 10.7 average and his tenth best nationally shooting percentage paced him to' 14.3 points an outing. Backing up Traylor will be sharp shooting Bob Mathias, whose 6-7 height leaves him at a disadvantage. The forward slots are Carolina's greatest point of inexperience as both slated starters are new to the lineup. Freshman Alexander Eng lish of Columbia's Dreher High School holds one position while a reserve of last year, Rick Mousa, holds down the other. Mousa is physical enough to sup ply needed rebounding help, while English Is expected to supply some strong defensive play. Backups are sophomore Tommy Cox, and freshmen Mark Greiner, Jim Clements and the host of swing men. Carolina's squad will face a strong schedule this year and should be hard fought to achieve their national pre-season rankings strictly on the basis of their oppo nents. But should Carolina's ques tions all prove positive then It would appear as If It would be proper to rejoice both now and later. Only Rick Murray is back from last year's 16-8 team, but a quartet of sophs appear likely to push him aside. Swingman Billy Moore is the best St. Bonaventure has to offer. Moore, 6-4, 215, averaged 25.3 points for 1971's 17-4 freshman squad. He will be joined by another sophomore, Steve Hocker, who hit 17.7 as a frosh and can keep up with the quickness of Moore.
