Remainder of tea Centervw BY BILL GRANT Sports News Editor Bob Daniels is in an enviable posi tion for a basketball coach. The first year mentor of the Marshall Thun dering Herd inherits a ballclub that went through a 24-4 season and broke into the national rankings and made NCAA Midwest regionals, and loses only one starter to graduation. Daniels who replaces Carl Tracy who moved on to -Wake Forest, is not accustumed to losing ballgames. He comes to Marshall from power ful Kentucky Wesleyan, where his Tough Marshall's 6-8 forward Rax pressure in game last season. Also fighting for starting berths will be returning veterans Richard Johnson, 6-8 Mike Pitt, 5-11, Ronnie Arnold, 6-4 and and Tommy Palmer, 5-10. Johnson, who was slated to handle the center chores, substained a pre season ankle injury and is not expected to be ready for the Eagles opening game. Daniels has only one main worry in his initial season at the helm of the Herd; where to find a replace ment for All-America center Rus sell Lee, who now is drawing his paychecks from the Milwaukee Bucks. Lee averaged over 24 points during his three year career for Marshall. So for now, at least, Daniels has moved in 6-7 Chuck Jackson to the Fo stop idy Noll takes jumper despite Noll led the Thundering Herd and averaged 16.8 points. Both Pitt and Palmer saw limited duty last season-Pitt due to a knee injury. He has returned to full strength now and he and Palmer are battling for the other place in the front court opposite Wallace. Arnold will be counted on again this year as valuable bench strength. As a reserve, Arnold pulled down 106 rebounds and scored 122 points. Rowe, like many coaches, plans to make extensive use of four freshman, the best of which would appear to be Dick Beuke a 6-5 swingman from Indianapolis, Ind. The Eagles have moved up through the ranks and have finally reached the top rung on the letter in status. Now the goal is to reach the top in competition. cls its! PINE: Lovely l under $10**! But, aside from the center spot Daniels has little to lose sleep about. Top returnees from last year's squad, a team that scored an aver age of 92.4 ppg, seventh in the nation, are guards Mike D'Antoni and Ty Collins, forward Randy Noll and swingman Bill James. All are seniors. D'Antoni, who has broken every assist record at Marshall as well as scoring in double figures in each of two varsity campaigns, can be con sidered a true candidate for All America honors. "He's the type of guard that everybody wants but few get. He's just great. He could easily be the best guard in the country." com mented George Washington coach Carl Stone after the Herd humiliated GW, 97-73. D'Antoni was named to the Marshall and Milwaukee all tournament teams, as well as being selected as a first team Academic All-America. Among his other hon ors, D'Antoni was handpicked by U. S. Olympic coach Henry Iba to par ticipate in the Olympic trials last summer. Noll, a 6-8 senior, begain his bas ketball career at Kentucky but transferred to Marshall after his sophomore year. During that span he was named the UK's outstanding frosh but only saw limited duty as soph. Noll, playing as a forward last season, averaged 12.6 rebounds pg, tops on the squad. If Daniels' center situation becomes desperate, Noll will move inside to the pivot but the Herd would lose his good outside shooting in the switch. Collins, who mans the other guard spot, was the Herd's leader in field goal percentage last season hitting at 52.7 percent and averaging 15.1 ppg. James, a swingman, started a number of games and contributed 8.8 points per contest. The Herd, even with their center problem and without an overabun dance of heigth, are a good, solid experienced team. Even if Jackson fails to develop in the pivot, this team has the ability to make Daniels first season in the big leagues a pleasant one.
