The Stoned Zone TO THE EDITOR: I have a niece attending your school. I shall not reveal her name for fear she will be scoffed at, called Priscilla Prude and Virginia Virgin and other such appellations. However, she is one of the for tunate girls. She is immune to this hideous age and its scarlet values. Her long brown limbs and tender bosom will not be despoiled by some lusting lout out for a cheap night's adventure. But what sort of age is this that permits institutions of higher learn ing to pass out birth control pills willy nilly, that allows students to cohabit without penalty? How long can our debauched society go on ignoring the mass distribution of films like Marjoe, pocket books like The Story of 0, or more recently Dolinsky's Mind One. How long can obnoxious disc jockeys continue to Splay recordings nationwide extol ling drugs and urging girls to "bang the whole gang." Young people, I ask you to take a moment! Pause, reconsider your peril. Save yourselves. Turn your backs on the licentiousness around ou. And dear editor I ask you, please rint my letter. ARTHUR GORHAM III Student syndrome TO THE EDITOR: As a student at U.S.C. for the past four years, I have noticed a steady decline in the quality and promp ness of the health care given here at the Infirmary, although I can't remember it ever being good. I have noticed that the long delays incurred have been lengthened drasticly in the past few months. Some students have been forced to forgo proper care for their ail ments, seek alternative sources of health care, (which they must then pay for twice) or be forced to wait hours in an uncomfortable, crowded room where their ailments increase in severity, spread to other stu dents, or themselves contract another student's malady. As far as the health care itself is con cerned, I have personally been treated for a stomach disorder by a dermatologist who may have been a very good dermatologist, but was certainly not the choice of a doctor I would have preferred to treat me, whether I had a stomach ache or a cold. I recently overheard a con versation by an attendant at the Russell House whose ailment had been diagnosed as 'student syn drome' when in fact she actualy had mononeucleosis which she later had to be treated for. Illnesses are not Itreated at the Infirmary, only sym ptoms, it would appear. A pill for Ithis, a shot for that. I realize that the standard 'small budget' excuses sometimes have validity, but if a coach can build a stadium surely money for proper health care can be found. Of course this is not possible because, according to Treasurer Rhodes, full-time students must pay both Infirmary fees and athletic fees whether they use the facilities or attend the games or not. Is this fair? I think it is just another typical U.S.C. rip off. I also am aware of the new health facilities coming soon. However, students who are ill now can't wait; if you don't provide prompt and good quality health care, the stu dent who is ill suffers now, not later. Can you do something about the long delays and poor service now, or must U.S.C. students continue to suffer? What action must U.S.C. students take to insure adequate health services? D. B. LEWIS Expression of bliss TO THE EDITOR: Regarding the review of "Death In Venice," I would like to present an alternative view of the movie. Having read the novel by Thomas Mann, I judged the film mostly in relation to the novel; consequently, my understanding of the film is based primarily on my understand ing of the book and also of Plato's Phaedrus from which the concepts of Platonic love are derived. In my view, the film is an exceptional adaptation of Mann's work with only a few distortions considering the degree of limitation in the film medium. The principal concern of both the film and the novel does not seem to be spiritual loneliness and lack of identity. To the contrary, it is the story of an artist dedicated to the creation of form and beauty. This dedication to the beautiful turns to love as the artist perceives a supreme form of beauty incar nate. In the novel Mann reveals Plato's concept of beauty as follows: "For mark you, Phaedrus, beauty alone is both divine and visible; and so it is the sense way, the artist's way, to the spirit." This spiritual love of Ideal Beauty can find con summation only through spiritual union with the Absolute. In the final scene of the film we see the godlike Tadzio pointing out ward beyond the sea. This scene sybolically seems to represent Gus tav's attainment of much higher spiritual reality rather than his destruction. The music from Mah ler's fifth symphony, which is heard at the end, is not an expression of futility but of bliss. KATHY WAGGETT Admiral B.S.? Assuming Mr. Mar tin is white and Teutonic, (which his Nazi-like organization implies), I would like to tell him that his white culture has never been "pure" in the first place; Genghis Khan saw to that. However, being the grandson of an American Indian, I hope your organization has made plans to compensate for the white blood that was poured into the red race. It's really a shame that the red race, like the Black, white, and yellow, is no longer pure. I guess our ancestors weren't aware of your organization. So, since I'm sure that these com ments haven't influenced you, Mr. Martin, in the least, I would like to ask one last question. While the National Socialists are dividing up the continents, what are your plans for the Jewish people-this time?? RICHARD PARR Paper stealing TO THE EDITOR: I have become appalled at the number of U.S.C. students who are stealing newspapers from the paper rack outside of the Russell House. Any person who is so cheap and dishonest as to steal a ten-cent paper should not even be at the University of South Carolina. I don't mean to be self-righteous about the matter, but I do fear that soon the newspaper distributors will be forced to close the news paper racks at the Russell House. Therefore, I urge all students to start buying their newspapers. If a student cannot afford to buy a paper he should go to the library *nd read one or else limit himself to reading The Gamecock.
