What followed was a pitiful job of refereeing. Call after call was biased. From the outset it became appar ent what the match was going to be like. Charlie Beall broke away and started scampering toward the goal line but a whistle sounded. The referee explained he had sounded it by mistake and brought the play back. State took the lead as a 40 yard penalty kick sailed through the uprights to make the score 3-0. The next obstacle that got in the way of Carolina was that Tom Utsey was kicked and came out of the game with a five stitch cut under his eye. The half ended with State leading 3-0. With ten minutes gone in the sec ond half Fred Holland was thrown out of the game. This gave State a two man advantage. Following the eviction, Beall broke one for 20 yards and a four point try. This gave Carolina a short-lived 4-3 lead. After the try Burke Hayes broke away and headed for the goal line but another unexplainable whistle sounded and the play was called back to the amazement of the Carolina players. With nine minutes left in the game, State had a long run and scored, utilizing its two-man advan tage to the utmost. Dr. Jim Wynn one of the three Carolina player coaches said of this play, "They just passed us out. When a team has a two man advantage and knows how to use it something is bound to hap pen, and it did." Beall best summed up the game when he said "It's hard to lose, but when you lose and it wasn't the team's fault it's terrible." With the Ruggers undefeated sea son literally stolen, their ultimate test will be bouncing back and beat ing a highly touted Georgia team next week. This is the last game of the winter season and the Ruggers will be trying to increase their unbeaten streak at home to 20 games.
