Even though tailback James Barber has scored 10 times on the ground while piling up 485 yards rushing, Strock has to come through if the Gobblers are to produce. For example, in a 24-20 loss to Virginia, he hit 15-29 for 141 yards; a 27-15 loss to Florida State resulted in just one Strock scoring pass; he threw one touchdown pass against Wil liams and Mary. VPI lost 17-16. If the Carolina secondary can stop Strock and his gifted receivers -Donnie Reel (26 catches, 524 yards, two scores), Barber (26,222, no scores), Mike Burnop (25,344,2) and Rick Scales (24,466, 6)-the Gamecocks stand a fighting chance. And regardless of a unenviable 3-5 record, USC has been effective against the pass. Carolina has yielded just 86.3 yards per game passing, as oppo nents have completed 61 of 156 attempts. This is in striking con trast to USC's defense against the run, where the Gamecocks have surrendered 1,460 yards, or 3.4 per play. Dobby Grossman will again be USC's quarterback, having com pleted 44-89 passes for 655 yards and eight scores. Jay Lynn Hodgin, fresh from a 100-yard plus game against wake last week, paces Gamecock rushers with 489 yards in 130 carries, while Mike Haggard and Jackie Brown have been Gros sman 's favorite targets, with 34 and 29 receptions, respectively. On the other side, USC will once again be without senior linebacker Rick Brown, who suffered a knee injury against North Carolina State two weeks ago. However Chan Beasley, Brown's replacement, was named Carolina's top defensive per former against the Deacons. In any event, Saturday after noon's game in Blacksburg should be an exciting one. Despite their better-than-average statistics against the pass, the Gamecock sec ondary has not faced a truly compe tent passer thus far in the season, with the possible exception of State's Bruce Shaw, who played (See VPi, Page 11, Colnmn 5)
