Endorsements: The Gamecock seriously considered not tak ing a stand on the presidential election this year. But after research and a little soul searching, we have decided, for what it's worth, to back the candidacy of George McGovern for the presidency. We do so with the full realization that what we say will have little or no impact on the way you will vote. All we ask is that you consider a few points about President Nixon's perfor mance for the past four years. Richard Nixon has had less contact with fewer people than any president in a long time. He has isolated himself in the White House to the extent that it is no longer "the people's house," but his own private castle where he reigns omnipotent and supreme. He is thus unable to understand or even comprehend the kind of life the majority of Americans live, much less effectively represent them. Nixon has surrounded himself with a rather unscrupulous band of men who subvert the democratic process for the sake of political power. He has appointed men to the Sypreme Court whom we believe are incapable of dea ling with the ever-increasing problems this country faces in an era of extremely rapid growth. These men will probably undermine further the Bill of Rights. Nixon is a threat to individual liberty. Final settlement of the war may not come for momths, or even possibly, in four more years. More than 20,000 American troops have died since Nixon took office, and we view his present vascillation as election politics, backed by little or no sincerity. He could have ended the war completely, or made strong inroads to peace, before now. Thus, our endorsement of George McGoverr is not so pro-McGovern as it is anti-Nixoi. McGovern has made mistakes which have dam aged his credibility. His administrative capabilities are untested, and his economic proposals may be rather shaky. However, his priorities seem to be more in line with democracy and humanness. The direction the country would move under a McGovern administration would be more sound. From Nixon we can probably expect more deception and frustration. McGovern is an unknown quantity, but we would like him to have a chance to show what he can do. Perhaps he will rise to the occasion. Again, voters are faced with an incumbent ogre and an unknown challenger. And despite recent deceptive appearances that Thurmond is trying to jog with the times instead of merely jumping rope, he comes nowhere near embrac ing the ideals and values of concerned college students in 1972. Thurmond, like Nixon, will probably be re-elected, but register your pro test anyway and vote for Ziegler. In Richland County, the Democrats once again present a better team than the Republi cans. Although the temptation to say "Vote Republican, start a two-party system" is fairly strong, the Republican candidates simply are not as well qualified as the Democrats. Re electing the Richland County Democratic delegation to the state house and senate will not be a mistake. There is one exception. The Republicans are running Robert Sandifer for Richland County Sheriff against incumbent Frank Powell. We endorse Sandifer. So there.
