The children the agency helps are those that need attention, and try v to get it by acting up in class or throwing temper tantrums. At first, Big Brothers and Sisters accepted only those children who were black and under-priviledge. Now, 20 per t cent of the children are white, and many come from the upper and mid dle class. Because there are more children than volunteers, the organization sponsers as many group activities as possible. The children go to movies, par ticipate in bowling leagues--there i are even Scouting organiza- 1 tions and a group of pre-schoolers a called Ginger Snaps. There are 158 volunteers for over 350 children in t Richland County. Big Borothers and Sisters is deli- t berately looking for volunteers who have made mistakes and will admit it. "None are 'super straight' or wear coats and ties," Norman says. "The children can't identify with people like that. Although the mini mun age is 18, there is no limit on how old a volunteer can be.
