Ballot d By Ben Baggott The deadline for filing an absentee ballot request is less than 10 days away. Approx imately 90 percent of the U.S.C. students who can vote by absentee ballot have not filed the necessary forms. Absentee voting proceedures vary from state to state. Even though several states require the filing of forms which range up to four pages in length, these are definitely in the minority. South Carolina requires only minimal paperwork. Time is the major obstacle students face in filing. At the outset, those who did not regis ter by October 7th are ineligible to vote in the November Presi dential elections. If you are elig ible to vote you must abtain an absentee ballot request form from your state. This form is available from the city or county board of voter registra tion where you originally regis tered. When requesting this form your name, home address, the address where the ballot should be sent and the reason you are requesting an absentee ballot must be included. The voting certificate number issued when you registered may expedite your request. According to Richland County officials, South Carolina residents may pick up a form at the Richland County Courthouse between 8:45 and 5:00 weekdays. After you have abtained your ballot request it should be completed and returned to your district for GR/ GL Register for fre JEANS - Landlubber-Pi Contur-Legnot Z pringchic INNER 2016 GREEN r-ALL-THE-SI OPN HAPH PRMU 12AN eadline drawi processing. Processing must be completed early enough for a ballot to be mailed to you, com pleted, and returned by the November 7th election. The processing of your ballot request and mailing of ballots usually takes from one to two weeks. October 27th is the latest a ballot request can be mailed with any assurance that you will recieve an absentee ballot. After you have recieved your form fill it out completely. Be especially careful to record your precinct number and registration certificate number correctly. Next, take the form to the Records Office in the Administration Building. Here the form will be okayed show ing that you are currently enrol led as a student. Following this you take the form to Asst. Prov ost Mitchell's office, (also in the admin. bldg.) There you sign the card and have it notarized (there is no notarizing charge). Leave the card here and it will be certified and mailed to you. Dr. Mitchell's office reports that at present all absentee bal lot requests are being certified and mailed the same day they are received. However, includ ing a stamped, addressed envelope will help you avoid any last minute delays. This all may sound long and involved but after you have recieved the ballot request form the remaining application proceedures usually take only 5-10 minutes.
