Finally, a pc MACS By Steve Parker Asst. Sports Editor Once again, while attempting to extend their winning streak, the Gamecocks will be facing a foe whose strength is questionable as they meet Miami of Ohio Saturday night at Williams-Brice Stadium. After dropping their initial three contests of the season, Carolina has rebounded to crush Memphis State and Appalachian State by handy scores. But victories over Appalachian and Memphis are not results which readily inspire the use of the work 'upset.' Miami carries a 4-1 tally into the Saturday affair, but the impressive ness of the mark must be questioned since the Redskins participate in the Mid-American Conference which is rated as one of the weaker Gr ntz USC E Quarterback Jeff Grantz h kicking but it was by no mea undefeated Carolina freshr Tulane frosh eleven, 29-14, in Grantz, a 5-11, 178 pound( 15 of 28 passes for 237 yards ai He also punted eight times ft pinning Tulane inside their te: good field position they used "Jeff did have a fine night said USC freshman coach now 3-0-1 and meet the archriv night. Although Miami may have not been beating anyone of any real rec ognition, the method in which the Redskins have achieved their vic tories has to leave football fans won dering if Miami has yet to be really rested. Only once has the Miami defense, the strong point of the team, surren dered more than seven points to an opponent, that coming in a 16-7 loss to Bowling Green, a team which upset Purdue earlier in the season. The Redskins have scored 119 points while their defense has limited opponents Dayton, Bowling Green, Xavier, Marshall, and Ohio University to 44 points collectively. The Miami defense currently ranks in the top ten in the nation in total defense, but the statistic may be deceptive since the Red skins have yet to face any offensive leads ,ffo rts ad a great game passing and ns a one-man show when the rien exploded past a strong New Orleans Saturday night. r from Bel Air, Md., hit on id all four Biddie touchdowns. r a 42.3 average, three times ri yard line to give the Biddies to drive in for scores. both throwing and kicking," Bob Ryan, whose Biddies are al Clemson JV's here Monday w other individual standouts eceivers Steve Stephens, Jim did a great job of pulling in :ire offensive line was vastly e he needed to throw." came through with five inter er despite Tulane's 181 yards a the hole early in the second , holding Tulane to 105 yards e first half." from Wilmington, N. Over the five-year span Miami ranks number two in the nation in total defense as their strong defense has constantly stifled the offensive threats of their MAC opponents. Although Miami's strength is its recognized defense, their offensive attack in this particular season has been equally impressive. With a big strong offensive line which open; line holes large enough to ddrive th4 proverbial truck through, the chiel Redskin threat has been theil ground attack. Utilizing their 5-11, 205 junior tailback Bob Hitchens, whose All America type running ability closely resembles that of Arizona State's Art Malone, now of the Atlanta Falcons, the Redskins have been able to establish ball-control. Hitchens has lugged the ball 172 times, including a one-game high of Senior defensive bac] moves toward sideline af Appalachian State pass,d TAKUNINNER! In direct contrast, the leading Gamecock rusher, Jay Lynn Hod gin, has carried just 74 times for 294 yards and four scores. Hitchens' running has opened the airways for Redskin quarterback Steve Williams who has completed over 60 percent of his aerial attempts. So effective has been the Redskin offense, that the team has punted a total of just seven times all season. Again in contrast, the Gamecock punted seven times last week against ineffective Appalachian. The statistic of just seven kicka ways in five games would appear to indicate that Miami does have an offensive threat, but the degree of the threat is again hard to judge (a )wn the sidelii L Neville Files 41-7 rout ove ter intercepting the first inter ring last week's Nevv US ed he2d picK USC because of their easy schedule. The question that arises is whether a school from a weak con ference with an impressive won loss record can defeat a team in the major independents carrying a mediocre, at best, 2-3 tally. Should Carolina fall victim to the Redskins, as they are picked by the experts to do, and with the rest of the Carolina schedule harboring some challenges which are cer tainly tougher than Miami, the future would be bleak. A victory over tough but question able Miami is essential to the Gamecocks as powerful North Carolina State lies next on the agenda and a loss to a small confer ence school is no way to establish momentum for the coming weeks.
