But on the 22nd day of the 19 season, the Carolina football tear played football. To man g onlookers, it was the first tim since last year that the Gamecock played the game as it should b played. In any event, it was th first time since mid October of 19' that USC scored more than thre touchdowns in a game. It was the first time since wh knows when that an effectiv ground game was established. ) was the first time since 1970 thi the Gamecocks returned to a wid open offense with a runnin quarterback. And above all, after what Hea Coach Paul Dietzel termed "staggering start," it was the fir time USC won a football game thi year. His second was a 39-yar scoring play, again to Haggard i 11:18 of the second quarter. Hi next pass was incomplete, but h followed with a 10-yard shot I Haggard, bringing the Gamecock to the Tiger 21 yard line. On the next play he drilled hu third touchdown pass of the half I Haggard, pushing USC to a 20. lead at intermission.In the thir quarter, Jay Lynn Hodgin swej right for five yards and a fourt score while Bill Troup, wh Grossman replaced midwa through the first period, connecte with Mike Farrell for 41 yards a the first play of the fourth quarte to end the scoring. "We could have scored twic more easily," Dietzel commente< "But believe me, I've been on th other side. I just wanted to win. And scores like 49-18, 24-0, 35-6 an 21-0 came back to mind. "Dobby is our starting quar terback," Dietzel announced. "There can be no doubt about that. "Bill Troup hasn't done anything wrong, and we're not trying to demote him. But we just decided to try Dobbie. Bill hasn't looked sharp since he got hurt in the Georgia Tech game." Perhaps the happiest member of the Carolina football family was Dietiel, who has taken a lot of criticism during the past three weeks. "The squad hung in there," he said. "We've had some tough weeks but we kept the faith and knew we'd eventually get there. It's amazing what can be ac complished by a little faith. "It was a tremendous effort and sticking together between the players and the coaches. This is most important to me. We've been there and back and I'm proud to be a part of it. We began our football season tonight. History takes a little look of spectacular starts." And one couldn't help but think that sometime early Saturday afternoon, Paul Dietzel looked at his team and said, "Let there be light." Because there was. In every phase of the game. in shift :ffense Carolina running backs, headed by Jay Hodgin, combined for 217 yards, an amazing figure when you consider that in three previous outings they had gained only 102 yards. A reshuffled line played like they'd been together for years. "Last week I was put up to, second string quarterback," Grossman said explaining the shift. "I was told I would get to play and to get ready to play." "Before the game we thought we needed some changes in our at tack," commented Carolina coach Paul Dietzel. "We'd been having trouble generating much of an attack with our drop back passing. A week and half ago Grossman was calling the signals for the varsity scout squad, red-shirted players who help the varsity in their game preparations. Saturday night Grossman entered the game on the third Carolina series and promptly put some long-absent punch into the USC attack. For the first time this season, Carolina put something on the field that could honestly -be called an offense. The Gamecocks rolled 436 yards in total offense against a veteran Memphis State defense.
