But on the 22nd day of the 19

played football. To man

since last year that the Gamecock
played the game as it should b
played. In any event, it was th
first time since mid October of 19'
that USC scored more than thre

It was the first time since wh

was the first time since 1970 thi

And above all, after what Hea
Coach Paul Dietzel termed
"staggering start," it was the fir
time USC won a football game thi
year.

"It was the first time we stopped
making the big mistakes," Dietzel
said. "We weren't taking chances
deep, the offensive backs ran
pretty darned well and the line
started opening some big holes."
The play of the line and the backs
was obvious. Hodgin ("a tough
runner") gained 91 yards in 26
attempts; Dyke Dolly, in his first

injected some excitement into an
offense that had become almost
boring in its three previous games.
"Dobby is our starting quar
terback," Dietzel announced.
"There can be no doubt about that.
"Bill Troup hasn't done anything
wrong, and we're not trying to
demote him. But we just decided to
try Dobbie. Bill hasn't looked
sharp since he got hurt in the
Georgia Tech game."
Perhaps the happiest member of
the Carolina football family was
Dietiel, who has taken a lot of
criticism during the past three
weeks. "The squad hung in there,"
he said. "We've had some tough
weeks but we kept the faith and
knew we'd eventually get there.
It's amazing what can be ac
complished by a little faith.
"It was a tremendous effort and
sticking together between the
players and the coaches. This is
most important to me. We've been
there and back and I'm proud to be
a part of it. We began our football
season tonight. History takes a
little look of spectacular starts."
And one couldn't help but think
that sometime early Saturday
afternoon, Paul Dietzel looked at
his team and said, "Let there be
light." Because there was. In
every phase of the game.

Carolina running backs, headed by
Jay Hodgin, combined for 217
yards, an amazing figure when you
consider that in three previous
outings they had gained only 102
yards. A reshuffled line played like
they'd been together for years.
"Last week I was put up to,
second string quarterback,"
Grossman said explaining the
shift. "I was told I would get to
play and to get ready to play."
"Before the game we thought we
needed some changes in our at
tack," commented Carolina coach
Paul Dietzel. "We'd been having
trouble generating much of an
attack with our drop back passing.

Dobby Grossman stood in front
of his locker and smiled, "It feels
great to win."
A week and half ago Grossman
was calling the signals for the
varsity scout squad, red-shirted
players who help the varsity in
their game preparations. Saturday
night Grossman entered the game
on the third Carolina series and
promptly put some long-absent
punch into the USC attack.
For the first time this season,
Carolina put something on the field
that could honestly -be called an
offense. The Gamecocks rolled 436
yards in total offense against a
veteran Memphis State defense.
