Har BY JIM HERSH The Carolina cross-country team has started practice for the 1972 season which begins with a dual mdet at Clemson, Sept. 23. Four veterans and one scholarship freshman head the team of seven runners. All five of the scholarship athletes are middle-distance runners for the track team. Sophomore Wayne Thomas and Wayne Thomas ...soph distance runner junior Jim Schaper will most likely fight for the number one position on the squad. Thomas, a 4:11 miler, was the number one man last year as a freshman. Schaper was injured for much of the '71 cross-country season, but had an outstanding year on the track during the spring. He started the season by finishing sixth in the 1000-yard run at the NCAA Indoor Championships and dipped below 1:50 in the half-mile several times last year. Sophomore Mike Sheley was USC's second half-miler, behind Schaper, in the spring. He has run below 1:53 in the half-mile several times. He seemed to be on his way to a good track season last year, running the half-mile in 1:54 indoors in the winter, but he was injured just after the outdoor season started and missed the rest of the year.
