The Carolina cross-country team
has started practice for the 1972
season which begins with a dual
mdet at Clemson, Sept. 23.
Four veterans and one
scholarship freshman head the
team of seven runners. All five of
the scholarship athletes are
middle-distance runners for the
track team.
Sophomore Wayne Thomas and

junior Jim Schaper will most likely
fight for the number one position
on the squad. Thomas, a 4:11
miler, was the number one man
last year as a freshman.
Schaper was injured for much of
the '71 cross-country season, but
had an outstanding year on the
track during the spring. He started
the season by finishing sixth in the
1000-yard run at the NCAA Indoor
Championships and dipped below
1:50 in the half-mile several times
last year.
Sophomore Mike Sheley was
USC's second half-miler, behind
Schaper, in the spring. He has run
below 1:53 in the half-mile several
times. The ex-Georgia high school

the cross-country team last year.
The other veteran is Don Brown,
a junior. He seemed to be on his
way to a good track season last
year, running the half-mile in 1:54
indoors in the winter, but he was
injured just after the outdoor
season started and missed the rest
of the year.
John Brown, Don's brother, is
the only freshman scholarship
runner. He has excellent
