"There was a lack of cooperation from the Administration's Registration Committee. They felt that priorities were not needed," McConnell said. "Originally we wanted to extend the number of priorities, but their reaction was definiatly not more than 500." Last semester student Government had nearly 3,000 requests for priorities. Following the denial by the Registration Committee the Student Senate voted to abolish the priority system set up through Student Government. They said that it was not fair to give out only 500 priorities when many more than that wanted and needed an earlier registration time. Student Body president David Spinazzolo said, "I don't think we should be handling priorities. I don't like Student Government working in a lackey role for the Administration in a system that can't work...i.e. 500 priorities with 2,500 applicants. "We are not a fulltime operation and don't even have the physical facilities. Besides, we have to operate on a first come first serve basis and after we give out the priorities there might still be 1,000 plausable reasons for students to get one," Spinazzolo said. "The people with the most legitimate excuse don't get the priorities. "What it amounts to is that on this campus if the Administration doesn't like something you can be ignored until an issue is dropped," he said. Spinazzolo went on to say, "I don't know if Dietzel will try to get the athletes registered early. I don't doubt that it could be done and I don't doubt that it will be done." McConnell added, "I feel if we cannot serve all on an equitable basis by giving out just a limited number of priorities then we should not attempt to serve a limited number." During the two years that Student Govern ment, McConnell said there was no way to determine who actually deserved the priorities. "Last year we called a few of the firms and found out that some requests were false. "But there was no real way to check 3,000 applicatirns," McConnell said. McConnell said no steps are being taken to insure a priority system for the spring. He anticipates a pre-registration system by that time rendering priorities meaningless.
