Income in the Charleston. Columbia. Greenville and Spartanburg SMSA's averaged an 8.6 per cent gain compared to the national average increase of 7.1 per cent. according to )r. Olin S. Pugh. director of the University of South Carolina Bureau of Business and Economic Research. )rawing from data recently released by the U. S. )epartment of Commerce. Pugh pointed out that South Carolina's rates of income increases included a 5.9 per cent gain in the Charleston area, 8.7 per cent in Greenville. 9.1 per cent in Spartanburg and 10.2 per cent in Columbia SMSA. South Carolina's favorable comparison with the nation's SMSA's. according to Pugh. was due mainly to the above-average performance of manufacturing. Nationally. earnings of persons engaged in manufacturing rose less than I per cent from 1969 1970 with manufacturing accounting for one-third of the total income. But in the South Carolina areas earnings of manufacturing rose about 5.5 per cent. "Most other major income flows in the South Carolina SMSA's." Pukh said, "were at or a little above the national average." He explained that Charleston's income increase of 5.9 per cent was the smallest of the four South Carolina cities mainly because of cutbacks in federal payrolls. "In Charleston." Pugh said, "there was a :3 per cent decline in federal payrolls which stemmed from a $23 million decline in military payrolls." Meanwhile, the average increase of the eight SMSA's in North Carolina, according to Pugh, was 8.7 per cent. as compared with South Carolina's average gain of 8.6 per cent.
