Close USC's Bruce Pudlock slides around the tag of Georgia Southern catcher John Tamargo in sixth inning action during Saturday's 4-3 win. The close run produced USCtops to end due By JIM HIERSII Sports Writer USC turned what was predicted to be a close meet into a rout by defeating Georgia, 87'2-57'2, in the last dual meet of the season, Saturday night on the Weems Baskin Track. The win was the Gamecock's fourth straight dual meet victory without a loss this year, and twelfth consecutive over three years. "I was really surprised by how much we beat them," USC mentor Bill McClure said. "I thought we could beat tiem but never figured that we would win by this much." Depth was the key to the Gamecock's easy win. While they had only one more first, 9-8, than Georgia, USC piled up a 12-3 ad vantage in second place finishes. Both teams had a double winner, hurdler Billy Novo for Carolina, and Joe Shearhouse for the Bulldogs. Novo won the 120-high hurdles, 14.2, and the 440 in termediates, 53.9. Georgia's star took the 220, 21.1, and the 440 dash, 48.0. The meet started out close as predicted, and it was not until the fifth running event of the day, the 104), that the momentum turned in favor of the Gamecocks. Milton Reid and Jim Small finished 1-2 in the 100, in front of Georgia's Ray Hamilton, to give USC the spark it needed. Reid was Ron . timed in 9.7 with both Small and Hamilton clocked in 9.8. "The sprints broke it open for us," McClOre 'om mented. In the next race, the 880,- Mike Sheley turned in his be'st time of the season, 1:52.7, to win and Jim Schaper was second in 1:53.5. Then Novo and Wayne Phillips, 54.4, got the Gamecocks eight more points by taking the first two intermediate hurdle spots. Those three races boost ed the USC lead to 35 points, 65-30, and for all purposes spelled victory for the Gamecocks. Throughout the meet USC won the events they were supposed to take and also got surprising wins in events they were not picked to win. In the shot put Forrest Broom, 52-6'?, and Rich Sorin, 50-9'?, did their share and took second and third. Chapman who won the event, threw the spear 219-4 to set a school record, one that had stood for 16 years. Cawley shrugged off his year-long back problem to hurl 209-4 for second place. USC's biggest win in the field came in the triple jump from senior Ron Rader. He went 48-1.., to beat the favorite, Tony Williamson of Georgia, by just less than one-half a foot. Bruce Stuart, who also tied for third in the high jump, leaped 47-21 for third. Bill Bryan, 15-0, and Brian Hyder, 14-0, took 2-3 in the pole vault, and along with Guy Hornsby, 22-6 for third in the long jump, were the other USC place winners in the field. T1he first running event of the night, the 440 relay, turned into a disaster for the Gamecocks. For the first two legs the race was close but halfway through the third leg USC's Keith Eidson suddenly stumbled, lunged forward and fell to the track. 4 "When they fall like that you know that they're hurt badly," McClure said. Georgia, of course, won the race by default, but the most tragic aspect for USC was that their co-captain had ruptured the achilles tendon in his left foot. "1 am really sorry that it hap fader pened to him, especially on the last race of his career.," McClure said. "Hie and Brian Hlyder (the other co-captain) have been good leaders for the team all year."~ USC took 1-2 in the next two races, the mile and high hurdles. Wayne Thomas, 4:19, and Schaper, 4:23.2, cruised to the mile win, while Novo and Joe McCulloch, 14.9, sprinted for the first two hurdle slots. lin the race before the decisive 100), Bob) l)empsey, 48.3: and Paul Meleod, 48.9, placed second and third, behind Georgia's Shearhouse, in the 440. Shearhouse became the first runner to beat Reid in the 220 in a dual meet this year. HIe ran 21.1 to beat Rteid's 21.4 second place time. ,iack Miller, 9:14.2, and Rod D)alton , 9:33.5, ran 2-3 in the two-mile, and Small.
