USC's slate toughest of nation's best "Who plays the toughest schedule in college basketball?", is a question that basketball fans continually arguing about. In an effort to settle this issue State Record Sports Writer Bob Spears has compiled information that shows that Carolina's Gamecocks battle with the roughest schedule of any team included in the Top Ten of either the Associated Press or the United Press International polls. Missouri 20-4 234-275 .462 Carolina, ranked ninth by the AP and seventh by the UPI, has met a schedule that has a combined 'eecord of 287-194, while a winner in nineteen of their twenty-three outings. USC's .597 mark easily heads the list with runner-up Long Beach State's foes 37 percentage points behind. Long Beach is currently ranked sixth in both polls, and plays in the Pacific Coast Athletic. Conference. Marshall, one of the two top eastern independents is placed at third with a .551 mark. Brigham Young, a member of the Western Athletic Conference, is sixth at '.551. Top ten, North Carolina is ranked fifth and the Virginia Cavaliers are placed in the number ten position. Perinnial national champions UCLA finds itself playing the ninth toughest schedule of the Top Ter with their opponents record 241-23( for a .505 mark. Marquette, an inependent, i currently ranked second in boti polls, however their opponents record is only 243-240. Penn, i member of the Ivy League, is ir the eighth position while Missour rounds out the list in eleventi place. There are only two teams in th Top Ten who have a combine opponents record less than .50( that being the .481 mark of Virgini and the .462 percentage o Missouri. Competing for the alumni squad will be such names as Skip Harlicka, Bobby Cremins, Glen ; Burkstead, Skip Kickey, Larry i Womack, John Weahles, Corky Carnevale, and John Ribcok. The Biddies will be coming off a 95-82 defeat to the Davidson Wildkittens and will be out to improve their 12-8 record on the season. e d Harlicka played professionally , with the Atlanta Hawks and is the a fourth highest all-time scorer for f the Gamecocks with a 17.5 average during the years 1966-68. Blue Ribba FISH & CI 2005 Gre In FIvE Track team third in SEC indoor By JIM HERSH Sports Writer Carolina's track team finished third in the independent section of the Southeastern Conference indoor track meet at Garrett Coliseum in Montgomery, Ala., Friday and Saturday. Three first place finishes led USC to 29 points in the meet. Florida State won the independent honors with 35/2 points while Georgia Tech was second with 34 points. USC's Jim Schaper set a coliseum record in the 1,000 yard run, Saturday afternoon. Schaper won the event with a 2:10 clocking. Billy Novo accounted for another Gamecock first place when he won the 60-yard hurdles with a time of :07.4. The other Carolina first place finish was won by the mile relay team, comprised of Milton Reid, Paul McCloud, Bob Dempsey and Schaper. In the shot put Carolina took second and fifth places. Rich Sorin was the runner-up with a put of 52-11. The USC two-mile relay team of Jim Davis, Don Brown, Don Layden and Mike Shely finished fourth. Carolina got fifth place finishes from Jim Small in the 60 yard dash, Dempsey in the 440-yard run, Brown in the half mile and Jack Miller in the two-mile run. The two-day meet was the Carolina coaching debut for new track coach Bill McClure and the fourth indoor meet of the season for the Gamecocks. Carolina opens their outdoor campaign at home against Furman and Western Carolina, March 14. Three dual meets, two tri-meets and two invitational meets comprise -the seven-meet USC home outdoor season. freshmen mi squad Ribock, who co-stars with Harlicka on the television show "Double Dribble,' on educational TV, was drafted by the Boston Celtics and Denver Rockets of the National and American Basketball Associations, respectively. "Bobby Cremins is one of the finest amateur basketball players there is around", said freshmen team coach Donnie Walsh. "I don't know if we will be able to defeat them," said Walsh, "They have an awful lot of talent. "We're taking the game very seriously, just as the alumni are," said Walsh.
