M cKendre Mahavishir By BOB CRAFT Staff Writer The triple concert sponsored by the University Union is tonight. It features The New York Rock Ensemble, McKendree Spring and the Mahavishnu Orchestra. It starts at 7 p.m. at Carolina Coliseum and is, without a doubt, the biggest thing happening on campus this weekend. N.Y. Rock and McKendree Spring have appeared here before and either you already know how good these groups are, or someone has told you how good they are. The Mahavishnu Orchestra, featuring John McLaughlin, is probably the one group on the bill that you haven't heard too much about. The group's music has been classed as "eclectic jazz" although. Jack Hafferkamp of the 'hicago Daily News said, "It isn't quite fair to call their music jazz." McLaughlin's organization also includes Jerry Goodman, late of the Flock, whose violin artistry earned him a place among the top ten in Downbeat's 36th annual poll. Also Billy Cobham, the drummer, who has played with such figures as Miles Davis, Dreams and A WS sellin Gamecock Associated Women Students (AWS) are selling Gamecock doormats in the Russell House today as part of a fund-raising project for The Bosom, the drug crisis center in Five Points. Volunteers will be selling the mats from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. today in the Russell House lobby. Saturday they will be at service stations at major intersections in Columbia. Price of the mats is $5. Linda Harvey, AWS first vice president, said, "These mats are the best made. The Monsanto Co. manufactures them, and the company is giving us the rugs. We keep $2 from every mat sold. Radio stations throughout the city are giving notices on the project too. "We need volunteers des perately to work Saturday for the project to come through," Ms. Harvey said. "We can use people for any amount of time they can give and we need volunteers to drive people to the selling points. Anyone interested can call me." Ms. Harvey said the mats are not on the market, and Friday and Saturday are the only days planned for selling. Donations for the drug center may be given also wherever the rugs are sold.
