ALEX H Restaura 988 Kn Stude served with meal nor Re 79012M -Tom Price Ruggers open home slate 0' 0 with win The Carolina Rugby team opened its home schedule Saturday afternoon with a convincing 23-3 victory over previously unbeaten North Carolina State. The game, played on a cold, wet field, was close during the first half, as the USC ruggers took only an 8-3 advantage at intermission. In the second period, Carolina broke the game open, scoring 15 points while holding N. C. State scoreless. Goals in the game were produced by Andy Gallin, who scored twice, Werner Mintchal, Nick Canzares, and Captain Dr. James Wynn. Fred Holland added a conversion to the scoring total. Carolina's 'B' team also triumphed on Satrday, defeating N.C. State's second squad, 9-4. Scoring for the 'B' team were Sam Belino and Jim Stone. USC is now 3-1 on the- season, scoring 89 points while giving up a mere seven. Sa,FredHlaadde achonvion o nthe scrn-ttl Houston burst drops Carolina By DOUG WILLIAMS Sports Editor HOUSTON- The University of Housten outscored USC, 22-8, in the opening eight minutes of the second half to overcome the Gamecocks, 95-85, here Saturday. Down 46-43 at Intermission, the Cougars exploded for 53 second half points behind the hot outside shooting of sophomore Donnell Hayes and the inside play of forward Steve Newsome, who scored 12 and 17 points, respectively, in the half. The tight first half, in which the score was tied nine times, saw the lead change hands another 15 times before Carolina forged to a 46-39 lead at the 1:54 mark. However,, Dwight Davis hit two quick baskets within 49 seconds to cut the margin. Hayes led the early second half assualt, netting 10 points, mostly from the outside. Newsome's jumper from the side at 16:19 gave the Cougars a 55-54 advantage, which they never relinquished. In the process, Houston scored 12 straight points, widening the gap to 65-54 after Hayes' corner shot with 13:16 remaining. Bobby Carver and Rick Aydlett each hit for Carolina, narrowing the lead to seven, 65-58. Aydlett's shot from the cornerat 8:*13 brought the Gamecocks within five, 70-65. But he was then charged with a foul on what appeared to be a clean steal. Two minutes later, Carver was given a foul for racing after a ball that was going out of bounds near the USC bench. Houston dropped in the free throws, raising their ad vantage to five, 75-70, after the Gamecocks had come within three. The Cougars then took advantage of some tight officiating to outscore USC down the stretch, 20-15. For some reason, Carolina was called for 11 personal fouls in the final eight minutes, including Aydlett's fourth and fifth, three on Carver and Danny Traylor and two on Kevin Joyce.
