James Wynn. Fred Holland added
a conversion to the scoring total.

HOUSTON- The University of Housten outscored USC,
22-8, in the opening eight minutes of the second half to
overcome the Gamecocks, 95-85, here Saturday.
Down 46-43 at Intermission, the Cougars exploded for 53
second half points behind the hot outside shooting of
sophomore Donnell Hayes and the inside play of forward
Steve Newsome, who scored 12 and 17 points, respectively,
in the half.
The tight first half, in which the score was tied nine
times, saw the lead change hands another 15 times before
Carolina forged to a 46-39 lead at the 1:54 mark. However,,
Dwight Davis hit two quick baskets within 49 seconds to
cut the margin.
Hayes led the early second half assualt, netting 10
points, mostly from the outside. Newsome's jumper from
the side at 16:19 gave the Cougars a 55-54 advantage, which
they never relinquished.
In the process, Houston scored 12 straight points,
widening the gap to 65-54 after Hayes' corner shot with
13:16 remaining. Bobby Carver and Rick Aydlett each hit
for Carolina, narrowing the lead to seven, 65-58. Aydlett's
shot from the cornerat 8:*13 brought the Gamecocks within
five, 70-65.
But he was then charged with a foul on what appeared to
be a clean steal. Two minutes later, Carver was given a
foul for racing after a ball that was going out of bounds
near the USC bench.
Houston dropped in the free throws, raising their ad
vantage to five, 75-70, after the Gamecocks had come
within three. The Cougars then took advantage of some
tight officiating to outscore USC down the stretch, 20-15.
For some reason, Carolina was called for 11 personal
fouls in the final eight minutes, including Aydlett's fourth
and fifth, three on Carver and Danny Traylor and two on
Kevin Joyce. After Davis fouled out with 7:14 remaining,
