Yes, Carolina, those Tigers are hungry and waiting and those Clemson "'Rabble Rousers" make their presence known. The theme at Clemson was 17-7, the score of the Clem son-Carolina football game, but that performance belongs to Paul Dietzel and company, instead of Frank McGuire and his basketballers who defeated Clemson for the 10th straight time. Clemson's vastly improved Tigers enter the court from a place called the Tiger Den, for some strange reason, and do layups to the tune of the growling Tiger. The Tiger, with his rubber chicken hanging from a club, parades the court along with'the Country Gentleman and the "Rabble Rousers" raise the roof. The type of spirit displayed by the Tiger, the Country Gentleman and the sound of the growling Tiger in the background is good for basketball and adds to the color and excitement of amateur athletics, but those "Rabble Rousers'" are something else. The "'Rabble Rousers," a group of spirited students seated directly behind both team's benches, can be more than spirited and at times were utterly disgraceful Saturday night, as attested by McGuire and his entire squad. "The audience was wonderful, but the remarks of those guys behind me were so bad I won't repeat them. It brings back the old ACC thing," said McGuire. "This is the first time that it's happened this year in every place we've played. I hope it never happens at our Coliseum.'' McGuire, obviously disturbed, continued to dwell upon the boisterous fans. "I was hit with something in the chest when I entered the court. Most of the fans acted as if they were in a theater, but there were about twelve guys directly behind me that kept it going the entire game. I don t care if they call me a lousy coach or something like that because I expect that, but that language was uncalled for.", The Gamecock mentor pointed out that most of the statements were directed toward himself and Casey Manning. "I don't care what they call me, but I didn't like them naming Casey like that. I don't blame Tates Locke for any of this, he and I are good friends. The people in charge are responsible for this. Where is the athletic director?" Rick Aydlett, who got in foul trouble early in the first half and spent a portion of the game on the bench, also was disturbed by this group. ''This is the worst I've ever heard, the statements were vicious. They even continued during the National Anthem.'' It would seem that with the emphasis on college basketball today things like this wouldn't happen, but they do and must be stopped. With Tates Locke at the helm, Clemson basketball fans can expect to have a winner, as evidenced by their fine undefeated freshman team, and it is hoped that they will learn to appreciate good basketball whether it Is theirs or the opposing team's.
