Clemson with their controlled offense setting the pace trailed by only two points, 29-27, at the half. The Tigers grabbed the second half tip and Dave Angel connected tying the score, 29-29, with 19:46 on the clock. Clemson spurted ahead, 29-27, on a basket by Denny Odle with 18:18 left and the capacity crowd was sensing an upset. The Tigers lead climbed to 39-33 on three straight points by Angel, their largest lead of the game. Tom Riker and Odle swapped a free throw apiece making the score 40-34 before the Gamecocks started to come back.
