Ga mec boards By BILL GRANT Sports Writer Carolina, completely dominating both the offensive and defensive backboards, humbled Stetson, 98 64, before another sellout crowd at the Coliseum, Wednesday night. The eighth-ranked Gamecocks, with Tom Riker pacing the club with 17, pulled down a total of 61 rebounds as compared to the much smaller Hatter team total of 26. The win upped USC's record to 12 3, while Glenn Wilkes saw his squad drop its sixteenth game in twenty one decisions. The game was close for the first seven minutes as Carolina came onto the court with a cold shooting hand, failing to score a field goal until 16:40 remained in the half. Stetson, in the early going, was relying on the hot corner shooting of Jim Orr, a 6-3 senior guard, Orr scored the first nine Stetson points and his jumper from the corner gave the Hatters their last lead, 9 7, with 14:33 remaining. USC, however, then deployed its very effective 2-3 pressing zone defense that went on to shut-off Orr until late in the half. The Carolina defense can also be credited with the effective cur tailment of Stetson ace Ron Beal. Beal was held to 7 points for the game, well below his 18.4 scoring average. Higl point producer for USC was center Danny Traylor who popped in 28 points, mostly on tip-ins and layups, despite the efforts of his overmatched opponents. Kevin Joyce added 20, while Ed Peterson came off the bench to hit 60 per cent of his field-goal attempts, and score 12 points. Orr paced the Hatters with 26 tallies. Although his team severly whipped Stetson, USC head coach Frank McGuire had praise for the Hatters and their coach. "All they needed was a little more height, or a big man, and they would have been tough,. But they were a well coached team, Glenn Wilkes is a great gentleman, and Stetson never lost their poise out there," said McGuire. "We tried lots of different combinations tonight," said the USC mentor explaining his em ployment of different backcourt men. "We were very happy with the play of our sophomores, they gave our regulars a chance to rest for Saturday."
