(by its rejection) student fees are being used to discriminate against points of view which are not 'liberal'." YAF made its request to prove a point . We expected it to be denied. Perhaps Agent Stirling should reconsider her position before she accuses YAF of hypocrisy. She states that YAF, which at least admits it is political, was "wisely" denied its 'request,' but certainly SCPIRG should be funded! It's politically wise to thrust when you're being hit in a vulnerable spot, and that is, I think, what SCPIRG is doing. SCPIRG would like to hide its sticky fingers by provoking a liberal-conservative controversy, or ANY controversy to take the public's eye off SCPIRG. Hence, Ihe ad hominem attacks upon YAF and its members. Instead of attacking the source, let SCPIRG discuss the issues. Let t hem talk about the way SCPIRG manipulated signatures at registration. No, in its collective arrogance, SCPIRG prefers to snub reality and stick to its preconceived timetable of already prepared press releases. The next will probably announce success of the petition drive. Well surprise, surprise. SCPIRG badgered name after name during registration, claimed to collected 7,500, but is apparently waiting for a respec table time lapse to announce success. Isn't it around two weeks, gentlemen? After all, the longer you wait, the more legitimate it looks, right? Yes, SCPIRGites, let us talk about your petition drive, and RING DAY C Ring Days I r changed to Feb. 15th az Wednesday, To qualify f4 ring a stude earned 75 h( 2 ring comp Balfour and Roberts - wi] their line of rings in the Can about Oregon, and about how you plan to rip-off U.S.C. students. BEN WYNN For SCPIRG EDITOR: According to YAFer Edward C. Fennell (in his letter to the Gamecock dated January 26), YAF is against any student fees which support "student govern ment, unions, newspapers" or student athletics. In short, YAF is opposed to any and all student activity - unless each group raises its own funds. Thus, the student newspaper would have to beg for money, the student government would have to beg for money, the foot ball and basketball players would have to beg for money - and, of course, SCPIRG would have to beg for money. This is not a very realistic scheme with which to run a university of 16,000 students with diverse interests - needless to say. For all practical purposes, the radicals who comprise YAF are simply against ANY constructive extra-curricular activity, whether it be basketball, journAlism, or working for a public interest research group like SCPIRG - because they are against funding these activities. One can easily imagine what ANY student ac tivity would come to under the YAF theory: There simply would be no newspaper, student govern ment, basketball team, film series, lect ures, sailing, SCPIRG, radio st at ion, rock concert - or any of the hundreds of activities that give life at USC another educational and social dimension. Fortunately, few listen to the YAF - including the YAF. They, I oo, asked for a share of student fees ($3,120.00 worth to be exact) despite their rhetoric and misstatements to the contrary. FRANK GARY IATE CHANGE iave been ruesday, id Feb. 16th or a Carolina nt must have >urs anies - John Li present USC class anpus Shop For amoebas EDITOR: Recently, Wagner Roberts wrote a letter to the editor in which he violently attempted to attack Mr. Eddie Fennell and YAF. In doing so Mr. Roberts succeeded only in showing his archaic intelligence rivaled only by that of the amoeba. Any individual with any common sense, while attempting such mud slinging antics, would at least use some sort of statistical background for his arguments instead of running off at his mouth. Instead, "Herr Emperor" showed that if common sense was manure, he wouldn't have enough to draw flies. Emperor Roberts attacked Strom Thurmond and Sol Blatt, calling them powerful enemies that don't want their "dirty linen" aired in public. It wasn't my im pression that the job of SCPIRG was to adt as an investigating committee for South Carolina politicians. Admittedly Emperor, you did bring up a good point about the athletic ticket rip off, and there really should be something done about it, but even in doing so you couldn't help but brag about your apparant apathy towards the school athletic teams. I might add that there is as much enthrusiasm towards athletics at this school as there is in a great majority of the schools in the country. SCPIRG, in theory, is great, but until the money and experience are put into SCPIRG to make it work, squabbling over a few dollars isn't going to make a bit of difference. YQur real efforts should be in raising money through voluntary means, rather than by forced taxation. SCPIRG could begin their conquest of the world by cleaning up all their publicity and tires which have become eyesores of litter on this campus, as a step towards ecological purification.
