USC hosts Deacon veer By STEVE PARKER Sports Writer Carolina hosts Wake Forest and It's rugged veer offense Saturday night in a contest that could decide the relative success of the 1971 Gamecock's season. If the Gamecocks should defeat Wake Forest, they would be assured of a winning season, regardless of the outcome of the season finale with Clemson. The Deacons, featuring their effective veer offense and strong defense, will be playing their final game of what has thus far been a 6-4 year. Coach Paul Dietzel said "It's not hard to prepare for Wake Forest. You know what they are going to run -- the veer option. The problem is stopping it." The veer option offense has opened the way for the Deacon's offensive attack: their running game. The effectiveness of Wake's running attack is evidenced by their impressive statistics. The Deacon's have rushed for 3,045 yards in their ten games, and need muster only 93 yards on the ground against the Gamecocks to surpass the Atlantic Coast Conference single season rushing record. Halfback Larry Hopkins paces the Deacon runners with 1,169 yards. Hopkins also lead the ACC runners in that department. Runningmate Ken Garrett is second on the squad with 722 yards. Perhaps the most impressive of all Deacon statistics, are those of option quarterback Larry Russell. Russell has scored a surprising 15 touchdowns and romped for 705 yards. In contrast to his impressive running statistics, are his passing totals. Although Russell is the Deacon quar terback, he has passed for only 283 yards, completing 27 of his 66 attempts, including only two scoring aerials. "Everybody talks about Wake Forest's offense but their defense is pretty rugged too," said Dietzel. Led by linebackers Ed Stetz, Ed Bradley and Larry Causey the Deacons feature a strong defense. Stetz's statistics include a remarkable 100 individual tackles and So assists. Strong side linebacker Larry Causey has been scrutinized in several of the previous Wake Forest games by professional football scouts. In contrast to the Deacon offensive attack is the Gamecock offense. The USC passing game has thus far proved to be a greater threat than their running attack. Led by Glenn Morris' 85 completions in 176 pass at tempts for 1,103 yards, the Gamecock passers have ac cumulated 1,252 yards via the air waves. The leading recipient of the USC aerials has been Jimmy Mitchell, who has gathered in 38 passes for 538 yards and two scores. Following Mitchell is Jackie Brown with 21 catches. Tommy Rhodes, a surprise starter in the last game with Tennessee, is not expected to repeat his starting role due to a hand injury sustained during the Vol game. Attempts at rusWing the ball have netted the Carolina runners only 991 yards in their nine games. Spearheading the rushers is injured Billy Ray Rice with 317 yards and a 4.3 average per carry. Rice suffered an ankle injury in the Tennessee game, and will be forced to sit out Saturday night's game. Carlton Hay wood is also bothered by an ankle in jury and may not play. Charlie Jetton will probably replace the in ured Rice and Haywood at the tailback slot. HARRIS of NEW YORK 1300 Main St. 1319 Main St. Check Our Stores Out.
