Columbia's mayor declares Dec. 1 Carolina Cares Day Columbia Mayor John T. Campbell has proclaimed Dec. 1 "Carolina Cares Day" as USC students prepare to collect money and goods for charitable causes. More than 800 USC students are expected to participate in this year's drive, seeking donations of money, food, clothing and toys. Steve Cannon, Carolina student and director of Carolina Cares for the third year, said students hope to exceed last year's collections when some $15,000 in cash and goods were donated. Students plan to canvass major traffic intersections, shopping centers and residential areas on Carolina Cares Day. Each student will have official 'dentification badges and solicitation permits to collect for the project. Money collected will be donated to the Woodyard Fund, the Metropolitan Education Foundation, Toys for Tots and the Wilkinson Home for Girls. Food will be distributed to the Columbia Urban League, clothing to the Salvation Army and the Urban League and toys to the Toys for Tots program sponsored by the U. S. Marine Corps Reserve. Students are needed for all phases of the project including persons to drive cars, answer phones and collect in the Columbia area. Students also are needed to work in the "core group" who will work all day in city in t ersect ions. Last year t his group of students was so successful, Gov. Robert McNair joked that his car was stopped three times by Carolina Cares students as he drove to work. Organization restructuring plans will be discussed in cluding an amendment offered by an ad hoc committee set up to present alternatives. Scott Holtzclaw, who presented his resignation as president last week, said he urges all members of ECO 70's to attend this meeting. "We need all members to take part in these very important changes." All students are reminded that the recycling bins have been placed on the first floor of the Russell House and more than 700 pounds of paper have been recyced already. Holt zclaw said if the pro ject continues to be a success there has been an indication bins may be placed in residence halls. "The success of the recycling project is up to each student," he said.
