Carolina m state rr By JIM HERSH Sports Writer The Carolina cross-country team placed second in the South Carolina State Cross country meet held at Furmbn, Tuesday. Baptist College was the winner of the meet with 50 points, just ahead of USC's total of 54 points. Six teams participated In the meet. Furman, 67, Clemson, 79, the Cithdel, 85, and Benedict, 185, were the other teams in the meet. Ken Layne harriers p keet; beat of Baptist won the individual title by running the Furman course in 26:19.9. The top Carolina finisher was Wayne Thomas who was fourth in the meet. His time was 26: 48. Rod Dalton followed him for the Gamecocks in fifth place with a 26:56 clocking. Larry Schemelia, ninth, Jack Miller, 15th, and Jim Davis, 21st, rounded out the top five for USC. Don Layden, 23rd, and Mike Sheley, 27th, were the other runners for the Gamecocks at the State Meet. Thomas and Dalton finished 1-2 for the Gamecocks to lead the win. Schemelia finished fourth while Miller and Layden were ninth and tenth. Davis and Sheley finished 11th and 12th for USC. The Georgia win leaves the Gamecocks with a 3-4 record with one meet left. On Nov. 15 the Cardlina harriers travel to Atlanta to meet Georgia Tech.
