Feare; favors It is hard to understand. The Gamecock Soothsayer resumed his winning ways once again last week but still the insults came. It seems as if those outside agitators resented the resident risktaker's selection of Georgia, even though he was correct. Those arch enemies of the poor prognosticator labeled the GCSS a traitor and threatened to fracture the fingers of the fearless forecaster. The unthinking hate mongers chased the GCSS into hiding and if he had not hidden behind some seldomly used dic tionaries he might still be a fugitive. Last week, 29-12-0, .709; for the season, 276-96-3, .737. Even though the resident risktaker correctly tabbed Georgia his season average continued to drop. His average has not seen the.750 mark in the last four attempts. Optimism still prevailed. Last week the Gamecocks faced one of the stronger defenses in the country. This week Tennessee also offers a fine defense, although it is not quite as strong as that of Georgia's. Defensive back Bobby Majors, linebacker Jackie Walker and a host of other strong defen ders might argue that point. Offensively, there are those who say that the Vols are worse off than Carolina. At quarterback the Vols are using fourth-stringer Jimmy Maxwell whose 36.4 completion percentage hardly puts the nation in awe. Tennessee relies heavily on their running game and the Gamecocks proved they can stop a running attack when they halted Georgia Tech. Last week the Gamecocks threatened to score on Georgia's tough defense several times. This week Carolina will find the Vols end zone slightly easier to dent. USC 23, Tennessee 13. Louisiana State sports a firm defense headed by All America Tommy Casanova, perhaps the strongest Alabama has faced this year. Still Bear Bryant has proved his teams can muster offense against seemingly ED davisem's rnn aster ocks immovable defenses in the past. Alabama does it again. Alabama 21, Louisiana State 15.
