Infirmary shouldn't distribute pill because of dangei MR. FARRELL: For four years, I have read statements like those of Mr. Cecil Amick (Gamecock, Oct. 27, 1971) regarding the distribution of birth control devices through the USC infirmary. While it is unfortunate that 2b calls a week come to Hotline regarding abortion, it is even more unfortunate that those persons who play with sex are not mature enough to face the responsibilities of their actions. Have they never heard of con doms? Generally they cost 25c each. Mr. Amick is evading the issue when he says that "to counter that such devices (bc materials) can be gotten off campus easy enough is evading the issue. "Grow up, Mr. Amick! It is expensive for a girl to consult private physicians but inconvenient? Mr. Amick states that the Health Center doctor like a private physician "should be expected to fullfill needs." A private physician is paid by the patient not by a state agency. He first examines the Patient and gives her information on other means of birth control. Wer. only 4 blocks away -- only Two-hour service S a.m.-2 p.m 1908 I Letter, The USC infirmary can not-issue the pill or other devices for a number of reasons. First, it is the University's responsibility to educate, not control student abortion rates. Can you -imagine the uproar if a parent found that USC distributed birth control devices to their daughter without their permission? A private physician has no such respon sibility to his patients' parents. It may have escaped Mr. Amick's notice but there is still some doubt as to the safety of devices like IUD and the pill. Should the University take the chance of possibly harming one of its students? Let me cite a per sonal example. I have been married for three years. My wife took the pill for six months after which she stopped due to side ef fects - weight gain, hard to get along with. To this date she has had only one period. She has been told that the pill injured her ovaries and she passed through something similar to menopause at age 23! It is possible that a fertility drug will enable us to have children, but how many of these children survive? Just recently a woman had five and all died. I would much rather have been a father for two years than never be one. We both wish she had never used the pill. Indeed, Halloween is over and yes, the traditional season -of Thanksgiving is ap proaching. With the exception of this sophomoric observation, we find the remainder of your editorial quite incomprehensible. Let us go through it step by step. First, Mr. Farrell, the Student Senate is a legislative body, the Gamecock is not. Would you deny the Student Senate veto power over the confederate flag legislation originating in the Gamecock of fice? Howeve'r, anyone who attended the Senate meetings (even though you didn't) or ever read good coverage of a Senate meeting, would know that the issue at hand was truly con ceptual and not specific. Thirdly, the resolution in support of Dr. Jones as president of the University of South Carolina was introduced in Senate at our second meeting of this year, only days after the criticism of Dr. Jones came to view in Charles Wickenburg's column. Please note that it was shortly thereafter that the Board of Trustees and the Alumni Council reaffirmed their support of Dr. Jones. Finally, as for the elections. Please note that like most senates, our Student Senate is a legislative body, and it did, in fact, set clear regulations for the fall 1971 elec tions. Thus, the Student Senate fulfilled all of its responsibilities in regard to the elections. JULIANNE STILL, PRESIDENT STUDENT SENATE KOGER BRADFORD, CHAIR MAN COMMUNITY RELATIONS COMMITTEE STUDENT SENATE FRED MAGNER, CHAIRMAN POWERS AND RESPON SIBILITY COMMITTEE STUDENT SENATE Political activists use Gamecock for own purposes MR. FARRELL: Harry Hope has once again attempted to sidestep the major issues involved in a legitimate debate of past and present Gamecock news bias with the injection of petty trivia and his particular brand of snide remarks into what could be an intelligent discussion. Mr. Hope, who for several years was a highly influential member of the Gamecock staff is well known for his own style of McCarthyism. That is to say either you dig Harry Hope and his rhetorical sayings or, by golly, you must a right-wing reactionary from Tower Red neckia. But the issues do remain! Are we as students to be forever satisfied to continue involuntary paying for a newspaper over which we have no control? Do political activists have a moral right to use this newspaper as a mouthpiece for their own propaganda purposes? Harry can go on and on down the sidetracks of diversion. He can talk about The State, The Rag, and other newspapers that he's not being forced to pay for. Harry hardly mentioned the major issue, but it was interesting to note that he is uptight because last year's Gamecocks have been displayed to Columbians. What's the matter Harry? Are you suddenly ashamed of your paper? Harry Hope, Jim Farrell and others have long maintained that the failure of the Gamecock to give more space to non-liberal and non left ist speakers on campus Is due to a phenomenon called "news value judgement." Why is it that this "news value judgement" always goes in favor of one political viewpoint? But, Mr. Farrell and this year's Gamecock staff have been open minded enough to allow this debate o be carried to the pages of the aper itself, this is much more that he Gamecock of Harry Hope's era wver permitted. Perhaps Mr. Hope Is already humbing through his dictionary of austic cuts in anticipation of ebuttal, but he would be wise to iut It down and discuss only the Bsues. I regret that it is necessary to urn down both generous offers riade by Mr. Farrell and Mr. lope. At present I do not have time be a regular member of the samecock staff, but I will continue submit letters and columns from me to time. I must also refuse larry Hope's offer on the grounds iat it appears that someone has Iready fetched him one six-pack o many.
