-- tAA t the n Audience wen Jimi Hendrix once did a show at Fillmore ; he went and did all of his hits. The crowd, of course, went *ld. Afterwards, Hendrix went backstage and asked Bill Graham what he thought of the show. Graham told him that he was disappointed, that he had hoped that Hendrix would go beyond the hits and show the audience what a good blues guitar was all about. This is basically what happened Friday night at the Carolina Coliseum. Dionne Warwicke came out and did her patented Bacharach-David songbook and made the audience scream with pleasure. The lastest thing that spraq out were a couple of songs from "Promises, Promises," a show that opened in 1969. This is not to say, of course, that it was a bad show. On the contrary, it was an extremely good show. The audience went home happy, the sound was way above average. Ms. Warwicke started her show with an extremely effective piece of showmanship. The lights were turned out, and from the darkness came, with no introduction, Dionne's voice, "Make it easy on yourself." It was the kind of thing that makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up. She came out and talked to the audience. She told them about how she had made a demonstration record of "Close to You" and how the Carpenters had made a hit of it. She told the audience how she had made another,demo, "One Less Bell to Answer" and' how the Fifth Deminsion had sold close to four million copies of it. Shemade catty remarks about Barbra Streisand redoing a favorite song of hers. She wished us luck against Georgia. Generally, the kind of talk an audience eats up. Her voice was superb and she put on a really fine show, but couldn't she have done something besides her hits? Dionne Warwicke links with the past did not stop with her solid gold. Her warm-up group, "The Con stellations" were something right out of The Temp tations era. Their clothes were identical, garish concoctions that Porter Wagoner wouldn't be caught dead in. They looked kind of like the Supremes in drag. Their music was even worse, unless of course you cherish 1963 soul music' with accompanying choreography. It might be unkindly said that Dionne keeps the Constellations around because no matter how bad she is, she looks good beside them. All in all, the Dionne Warwicke Concert served its purpose. Allman Bro guitarist kil Duane Allman is dead. Duane died Friday night from head and chest injuries he received when his motorcycle struck the rear of a truck near his home in Macon, Georgia. The Allman Brothers Band lead guitarist was pronounced dead at 8:30 p.m. at the Medical Center of Central Georgia, a little over two hours after he was admitted. Charles Wertz, the driver of the truck, told police that he had just finished making a turn on a city street when "I saw a motorcycle about 20 feet behind my truck. I slowed and heard a crash. I saw a boy lying on the pavement with a cycle overturned and going as fast as it could. I walked over and turned it off." No charges were filed against Wertz.
