Biddie with s By BILL GRANT Sports Writer The Carolina Biddies, sporting a new offensive formation, throttled the Clemson Cubs, 41-14, at Clemson Monday afternoon. Running almost exclusively from a never-before used full house backfield, backs Tom Zip perly and Tom Amrein each scored twice in leading the freshman to an impressive 281 yards on the ground. For Zipperly it was a record breaking performance. The 6-0, 170 pound tailback from Plantation. Florida. broke the frosh record for most touchdowns in one season. The old record (6) was held by Roy Don Reeves, Jimmy Mitchell and Billy Ray Rice. Clemson's offensive unit on the other hand, was plagued by seven turnovers, two being fumbles deep in Carolina territory. Both teams got off to a slow sart. neither scoring in the opening period. The second quarter. however, saw the Biddie offense return to its high-scoring ways. Early in that period USC quarterback Dobby Grossman capped a 36 yard drive with a 14 yard pass to tight end Steve Black mon to put Carolina out in front. 7 0. The Cubs pulled within 14 as Jimmy Williamson raced into the end zone from 50 yards out. Steve Fi::s' conversion was good and suddenly Clemson was back in the ball game. The Biddies, however, using their solid running attack, started playing ball control and eating up :he clock. Aided by the USC defense which picked off four Cub aerials. and came up with three recovered fumbles, the offense had good field position for much of the afternoon. To ice the victory Zipperly scored from the six, and, after an intercepted pass, Amrein rambled in from the eleven. Zip perly commented after the game, "The offensive line blocked well the entire game." Sherman has the deep South had such a decisive defeat pinned on it. And not since the Great Wall of China has there been a defense that has been so picked apart. And not since Sonny Jurgenson have I seen a quarterback as good as Gary Huff. The statistics of Florida State's trouncing of USC bear this fact out. Huff completed 26-41 passes for 366 yards and five touchdowns. To say nothing of his running for a sixth. Almost by himself, the junior quarterback humbled Carolina's vaunted defense in the Seminoles' 49-18 victory over USC.
