BC fal USC 1 By JIM HERSH Sports Writer Carolina's cross-country tear used their depth to defeat tb Baptist College harriers, 25-3 Thursday at Sesquicentennii State Park, the Gamecock's hom course. Baptist's Ken Layne was th individual winner of the meet in 4 time of 27.33 on the 5.3 mile course However, the Gamecocks wer able to capture the meet by takinq second, fourth, fifth, sixth an eighth places, running their recor to 2-4. Sophomore Rod Dalton was th first Gamecock to cross the finis] line with a 27.43 clocking. Baptis took the third spot but Wayni Thomas finished fourth for USC He was timed in 28:23. Carolina's Jim Davis and Jac Miller finished within one secon of each other to capture the fift1 and sixth spots. Davis finished b 28:58 with Miller a second behinm in 28:59. Don Layden was the nex Gamecock finisher as he place4 eighth in the meet with a clockin of 29:48. Mike Sheley, who finished 12t0 and Bill McAlister, the Iti finisher, were the sixth an( seventh men for USC. Sheley'i time was 30:50 while McAliste covered the course in 31:48. "Layne is a e good runner," West said of the meet winner, "but their other e runners did not run well." He will miss the next Carolina meet, Oct. 30 with e Georgia, but West hopes to have him back for the State Meet Nov. 2. t Larry Schemelia has been e sidelined all year because of an upper respiratory ailment. However he is expected to run in c the Georgia meet. Last year : Schemelia was the Gamecock's top ri runner. I Meanwhile the healthy I Gamecock runners are using twice t a day workouts to reach their I performance capacity. In the I morning they wake up to a four mile jog and in the afternoon k, aveiage ten nfiles a workout. I The Georgia meet, Saturday Oct. 1 30, will be held at Sesauicentennial s State Park at 3:00 in the af r ternoon. Other meets remaining on the cross-country schedule are the State Meet, Nov. 2, at Greenville, a dual meet with Georgia Tech, Nov. 15, and the NCAA championship at - KnoKvile, Nov. 22. Ruggers Carolina's tough Rugby team continued it's winning ways by trouncing a visiting Duke team by the one-sided score of 34-0 in a contest played Sunday af ternoon on Intramural field B. "The game was never in doubt, it was a Carolina runaway victory. Duke seldom even threatened to score," sai4 rugger Andy Gallin. We couldn't handle the ball in the second half otherwise we would have had a lot more scoring." Once again the ruggers demonstrated a spectacular defense as they held the Duke team scoreless. Through their first three victories the Carolina team has scored 91 points while limiting opponents Davidson, Clemson and Duke to a combined total of only 10 points. Jack Classen opened the scoring assault with the first of his two tries during the game. Burke Hayes followed with another try. Florida State's line stymied the Gamecock rush all night. "You have to have a line for anythil" said Huff. "After every play they'd come up to me asking if I had had enough protection. "I really appreciate a game like that," Huff continued. "We knew ;we had to come back after Florida, ;and had to try harder. Carolina iB one of our big rivals anyway, and since Coach (Larry) Jones is so close to Coach (Paul) Dietael we knew it meant a lot to him. We were really glad to win it for him. As we came into the game, everybody was worried about everybody else getting down. It was that kind of game." Head coach Jones, though ob viously pleased over the win, remained subdued with thoughts of injuries. "They hit s hard and we lost a lot of people," he ad, "Huf and Gaydos were playing with injuries. "I was really proud of our comeback," said the young State mentor. "After sucha poor start, It was great. "And what can you say about Huff, Dawson, Gaydos, and (Barry) Smith?
