"We just got the living fin knocked outof us out there," said a dejected Paul Dietzel. "It was a real old fashioned lacing. We tried just about everything we could think of to try and get to Huff and just could not do it. He's a good one. There's no doubt about that." After a mediocre first quarter, when USC jumped out to a quick 10-0 lead on Glenn Morris' two yard scramble and Tommy Bell's 30 yard field goal. Huff took over. He led FSU on a 98-yard scoring drive in nine plays, hitting Rhett Dawson for the final 32 yards on a perfectly executed pass play. Frank Fontes converted, and the score tightened at 10-7. But then, USC made the first of two major mistakes in their kick return game. Dick Harris took the ensuing kickoff and raced to the Gamecock 35, where he fumbled. Six plays later, Huff connected with Kent Gaydos, who supposedly was incapacitated with an ankle injury, for 10 yards. After Fontes converted, the Seminoles had a lead that was not to dwindle. Once again, Harris fumbled the kickoff, and Huff took full ad vantage. On the second play of the drive, he lofted a high pass to Barry Smith down the left sideline, and FSU had scored their third touchdown in a span of 2:07 minutes. "We had a couple of really bad turnovers that pretty much changed the complexion of things," Dietzel said. "Those two fumbles hurt us badly. There's no denying that." Before the half ended, Huff scrambled five yards for Florida State's fourth touchdown of the quarter. Then he threw to Dawson for the point after, and the only thing that appeared to be left in doubt was the final score. After Carolina took the second half kickoff, linebacker John Lanahan snared a Morris aerial intended for Billy Freeman and danced 32 yards Into the end zone, increasing FSU's lead to 35-10. Down by four touchdowns, the Gamecocks fought back. Tommy Simmons blasted in from one-yard out for his sixth score of the season. Morris then hit tight end Freeman for the two point con version to narrow the margin to 17 points, 35-18. The Seminoles were not quite finished, however. Huff fired Gaydos and Dawson another scoring pass each, covering 18 and 23 yards, respectively, before head coach Larry Jones removed him from the game. The junior signal caller com pleted 26-41 passes for 366 yards and five touchdowns, equalling records for scoring passes that were set by previous Florida State standouts, Steve Tensi and Bill Cappleman. In addition, it was FSU's highest point, output since 1963, when the Seminoles crushed Furman, 49-6. It was just not a good night for the Gamecocks. USC lost four fumbles and had two passes in tercepted. Carolina rushers could pain only 56 yards on the ground, ve touchdowns za rout Larry Jones: Team Nabs Win although Billy Ray Rice was the game's leading rusher, with 69 yards on nine tries.
