It's like t Spori (Continued from page 6) McGuire will be without All Americas John Roche and Tom Owens for the first time in three years and that will necessitate a change in the style of play. "If one of the boys prove to be another John Roche then we will let him control our offense like John did'," McGuire said. "Until then we have to adjust to the players. We will have more people in on the offense, more people handling the ball." It's much too early for a starting lineup but McGuire did mention some of the boys that he would like to have in the game. "The com petition for positions is keen," McGuire said. "We'd like to have both of our big men (Danny Traylor and Tom Riker) in the lineup. Traylor is good inside and Riker is good outside. And then there is Kevin Joyce and Bobby Carver who came on so strong last year and Rick Aydlette who should be in the starting five. And Brian Winters and Ed Peterson are good prospects. We'll know probably by Nov. 29 who will be starting." "It's exciting from the first game this season because we don't know what we will face," McGuire said. "It should really be in teresting to the spectators. South Carolina will be the most exposed team in the nation. No football or basketball team will get as much coverage as we will. The Marquette game will be the biggest game of the year as far as viewing audience is concerned. And when you get that then you know you're on the top. Also, it 'll help our recruiting and this year we'll be recruiting heavily." The Gamecocks opened their season earlier this fall in the Dixie Classic, but "played terrible" according to Melton. Since being an independent, this is the first time Carolina has been eligible for fall competition and is taking full advantage of this privilege. Melton considers the addition of fall competition an advantage to his team. "It was a unique problem for us not playing competitively in the fall after playing in tour naments all summer. That was a fault in the ACC not allowing competition among teams in the fall. That is no way to make a championship team," said Melton. USC has three triangle matches with Furman and Wofford this fall, first at the Red Fox course in Tryon, N.C. Oct. 28, at the Furman University course Nov. 5 and at the Spring Valley course Nov. 16. The Gamecocks will also compete in the Biscayne Intercollegiate tournament in Miami, Fla., Dec. 22. Carolina returns seven let termen this year including co captains Jimmy Hamilton and Wade Mayo with only Hap Lathrop lost by graduation. Other returning lettermen include Wylie Ramsey, Os Hillman, Max Poteet, Buddy Bostian and Rusty Shealy. Two freshmen, David Dupre of Columbia and Frank Little of Morristown Tenn., are also counted on to strengthen the team.
