Men who ran don't deserve amnesty MR. FARRELL: I am opposed to granting am nesty to those who have left us during difficult times. The question is not simply whether or not the war is good or bad, or whether one likes it or does not. The question revolves around the concept of responsibility in time of crisis, or for that matter, during halcyon times. Probably the bravest men are those who decided not to fight but who stayed in this country to face the consequences. Some went to prison, some became con scientious objectors and served as battlefield medics, some par ticipated in domestic programs here at home. The important thing is that they didn't cut and run. They worked within the system for an end to the war and in the meantime they stood by the courage of their convictions. These are the men who deserve our respect and any amnesty if it is so coming, not those who left us here "FIRE! MARSHALL SWANSON ThrowROTC off campus not'end goal' MR. FARRELL: After reading a number of letters pertaining to the ROTC debate, I find it necessary to clarify the reasons why a number of us oppose its being on campus. Neither Pete Brown, Weyman H. Dodson, Jr., or anyone else has presented the issues "pro" or "anti" in an ac ceptable prespective. It was H. D. Thoreau who said: "Those that while they disapprove of the character and measures of a government yield to it their sup port are so often the biggest ob stacles to reform." This statement applies to the majority of ROT Cies; just like it applies to millions of Amerikans who disagree with the inhumanities and injustices handed out around the world-and at home-by the Amerikan Octopus, but who refuse to act because their vested interests and traditions are or seem to be at stake. To throw ROTC out of campus is a goal, but not the end goal. Ac tions relating to this "grass roots" OALE" ne off a charcoal. fire. y comes to SHIMMY'S for best Pizza's in town-Have I A.B. Amerikan Imperialism is responsible for crippled and dying children in Vietnam. Amerikan Imperialism supported Trujillo and supports the Greek military junta, Franco and over twenty other dictatorships around the world. Amerikan imperialism is responsible for etc., etc., etc.. FARRELL: I find it odd that Mr. James V. Parker Jr.'s letter about the Viet Cong flag flying on a fraternity house could be printed again, in full, in the Gamecock in its entire ty because of the omission of ap proximately four words while my letter entitled, "Students Not Silent," in the September 22,1971 edition was not also reprinted after the omission of two whole quotes each about a paragraph long. The first could have been deleted and the letter still understood, but the omission of the latter quote made WATER $1800 51 THE WATEI 20 E. As I have already told you privately, I realize my letters are very often extremely long but that is because I don't feel I can say anything very intelligent or worth reading in under forty words. A defect I suppose. If, on the other hand, my letters are to be printed I would like to have them edited with the same care and time I spend composing them. If this cannot be done, and my letters must look as if they were written by a fool, then I'd rather not ever see another of my "Letters to the Editor" in print again. There is another thing that I find irksome, and that is the special welcome wagon hauled out by a rump senate for Josh McDowell and the grovelling posture it has taken before the state legislature. If there is something I cannot stand, it's mongrelism and toadying up to one's inferior superiors. Adding disgrace to ignominy, the student senate goes even further and extends a unique and special welcome to a Middle American Jesus freak and representative of an organization that is America's anhwer to the 'search for the Holy Grail'. My personal distaste for the double standard, as well as the Christian religion and traditional religion in general, knows no bounds. Religion is a humiliating and debasing invention of mankind, and the sooner the people open their eyes and see just how stone' dead God really is the better it will be for mankind in general. Man must have courage, seek the truth, - but above all he must stand upon his own two feet and accept the responsibility of his own actions not lay them at the feet of some lifeless statue and ask for forgiveness again and again. And another thing; just because some clown finally realized, before anybody else I'm sure, that U.S.C. is an agency of the state, it does not mean that the legitimate government of the students cannot censure the state legislature. It should have every right to do so and a lot of other rights it does not yet have or exercise-it was only a symbolic gesture anyway for, as everybody knows, the student government is about as powerful as a eunuch. If, however, iLt does not have this right, then I ' have been misled and the whole student government amounts to little more than a sham, a game of charades, and, hence, should be disbanded forthwith on charges of fostering false expectations and hope. WAGNER ROBERTS Obscenity of audience ruins show MR. FARRELL: The movies shown at the Russell House have always been of the highest quality. Unfortuately, the same cannot be said of the audiences. The film show last Sunday night (Oct. 10), Birth of a Nation, would have been much more enjoyable had it not been for the numerous obscene and race oriented comments made -iy a small minority of the audience. W. M. GILMORE III V. A. best' wishes aren't panaceas for stomach MR. FARRELL: Once again I'm faced with the vague feeling that somewhere high there is a God, who, with his lot in heavenly society, has seen fit to single me out for special attention. First it was starvation through undergraduate school, then poverty in the Army. Ah, but I thought relief was in sight when I entered law school for, after all, I had paid my dues and now Uncle Sam was going to pay his via the G. I. Bill. How quickly disillusioned!! I'd forgotten the wheels of govern ment turn slowly, their favors to dispense. So here I sit in mid October with nothing but the Veterans Administration's best wishes to fill an already shrunken stomach. I paid my dues on time, why can't our Uncle. --DAN WRIGHT -P.S.
