Dietzel wary of State (Continued from Page 6) terback but I think they have finally settled wilh the best boy, John Robison who is a sophomore. "They are blessed with backs,'' Lewis continued. "'The guys they have playing first are not any better than the number two backs. They are exceptionally strong at fullback where three boys are capable of playing and doing a good job. And they have a wingback that runs the 100 in 9.4.'' The Tigers are 1-1 on the year with an easy 30-0 whitewashing of West Texas State and a 42-21 setback to powerful Mississippi. "'They have not played up to their potential,"' Lewis said. "They are a big, strong football team." For Dietzel this will be his second meeting with Memphis State and he hopes this one is more pleasant than the first. "We played State my first year here and got beat as physically as we have ever been beaten," Dietzel said. "After the game some of the Memphis players were quoted as saying we were the softest team they had ever played. I hope that doesn't happen this year." Dietzel was pleased with his team's win over N.C. State last week but was upset over the loss of Mike Haggard for the season and Chuck Mimms for at least ten days. Haggard and Mimms suffered knee Injuries against State. "We had moved Haggard to running back last week to take advantage of his speed. And Mimms was our top rusher." With Haggard out junior Jackie Young, the starting quarterback at the first of the year., was shifted to flanker. ON Bee. What a start it was, Town Men picking up where they left off last year, destroying a determined Bates No. 2 team 34-0. On the first play from scrim mage Town Men linebacker Danny Bore intercepted a pass and raced into the end zone for a score. Dave Hines followed with the PAT. Later in the first quarter Hines scored on a well executed play with plenty of good blocking. The PAT was no good as a Sanders' pass was intercepted in the end zone. The defending campus champs never let up in'the second quarter as Jim McMahon scored on a pass from Sanders. Brian Mahelsky's run was good and the score became 20-0. USC, clash i season By BRYAN BLACK Sports Writer Coach Jackie Powers' freshman football team opens its 1971 season Thursday night against the Citadel Bullpups in the Cockpit. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 in what promises to be an exciting opener for the Biddies. At quarterback the Frosh have two good prospects in Dobby Grossman from Bloomington, Ind., and Andy LeHeup, the brother of varsity standout John LeHeup. Powers has said, "I will probably itart Grossman, but I hope to let LeHeup see some action also. Grossman is a very fine ball handler, as well as a good runner and he can throw the football." Also in the backfield starting at fullback will be Billy Cregar from Wheaton, Md. "On the offensive line, guards Ike Houck from Pittsburgh and Jerry Witherspoon from Lancaster have shown considerable promise." Powers said. Powers also named several defensive standouts for the fresh men. At end Robert Wood from Winnsboro will start. Starters at the two defensive tackle spots will be Buck Thompson of Anderson and Bobby Bethea of Orangeburg. At linebackers Gary McLauren and John Connell will bolster the defense. N. J.. and Tony Jurik from Pittsburgh will be two of the starters in the defensive backfield. I am impressed with The Citadel." said Powers. "Even though they lost their opener to Gordon Military. 26-20. Gordon had the Citadel outmanned, but the Bulipups took an early lead and nearly pulled an upset. The per sonnel of Gordon Military is so good that several varsity staffs were scouting this game for possible junior college transfers. Frosh Quarterback: Dobby Grossman "Every year we have trouble with Citadel. They get fired up to play us. This is the big game on their schedule. Last year they beat us 9-6 and only lost one game all season. This should be a tough opener. *"The whole coaching staff is anxious to see what we have got. We know what the boys should be able to do, now we will see what they can actually do. We have better overall team speed than last year. We should also have better overall team balance than we have had in the last few seasons." AND il flavored iash over N, Bar-B-Q ) Blossom St. At the Bridgea
