Little today took ex ception to a GAMECOCK story Wednesday which, Little says, implied the Alumni Council was singling out one area of University life for special praise to the ex clusion of other areas of the University. Little said today the Alumni Council passed a resolution at its last meeting which "...quite simply expresses in general terms the pride the Council has for the total development of the in stitution. The Council decided sometime ago," Little continued, "that it wanted to recognize the accomplishments of the University in all areas with periodic resolutions to that effect. The resolution alluded to but mis interpreted in the GAMECOCK Wednesday is the first in this anticipated series," Little con cluded. Woma By LOU TENNANT Staff Writer A USC coed, Miss Debbie Nye, was sworn in Wednesday as one of two female legislative aides in the South Carolina Senate. "I became interested in the job when I read an article in the State newspaper this summer about the Senate passing a new resolution permitting females to be hired as legislative aides," she said. "Then I wrote the senators from Richland county and told them what I was' interested in and included an autobiography," Miss Nye said. "The Democratic senators from Richland County, William J. The only difference between her job and that of the male page is that she will not be allowed to run personal errands for senators. Earlier thIs year, another USC student, Miss Vicki Eslinger, has been refused employment as a Senate page by Thomas. She filed for a partial summary judgement In a local court, claiming that she had been refused the job on ac count e@f her sex. Thomas had rejected her application for Senate page, saying that "womem reduced the dignity of the Senate." "Our contention is not that I have a fundamental right to be hired as a page," MIss Eslinger said, "but that under the equal protection clause in the 14th amendment I have the right not to be refused employment as a public servant due to my sex." She added that she felt that the service on and ormation SDOMROE writer solicit. It is a referral service nation. Volunteers do not ask al questions. Thomas, however, said he Is still personally against hiring female pages. "I might be of the old school, and I cnnfess I am." he said, "but I just don't think it Is proper for females to run personal errands for Senators." He added that he didn't think that he was discriminating against women because his entire staff was female. Commenting on Thomas' feelings, Miss Nye said that she could see his point of view but that she didn't think that the distinction between her job and that of the male page made that much dif fennce.
