Transcendental Meditation (T.M.) is a "natural, effortless" mental technique of "direct ex perience." During T.M., one's awareness is led beyond the everyday conscious level through finer mind levels to fields of in creasing energy, creative in telligence and happiness. Recent scientific investigation of T.M. has indicated that different states of consciousness, with varying physiological func tionings, can be produced. During T.M., these differing functions are a reduction of respiration and 4NTE ull or Part time) LESGII (Apply Downtowl EITTOl' S edules )n talk heartbeat, approximately a 25 per cent reduction of cardiac output, a reduction of oxygen consumption of about 20 per cent and an in crease of skin resistance of up w 500 per cent. Brain wave patterns (EEG) increase Alpha waves with occasional bursts of theta trains. After a few months of practicing T.M., individuals report such results'as: "an increased depth of understanding life, increased and refined perception of the world and a satisfaction deep beyond description..., increased mental capacity and memory, greater productivity and improved physical health." Students often report grades going up. Persons involved with drug use generally say they find the fulfillment they were looking for but were unable to find in drugs, according to Dahl. D ILS
