That was the gratuitous insult Lee Michaels handed the ushers shortly after he made his appearance on the Coliseum stage Friday night. But Michaels was wrong. The gig pigs were not the ushers. In fact, it was tough trying to decide who were the real gig pigs between the behavior of some members of the audience - and Michaels lack of professionalism. To insult the ushers, who had done absolutely nothing offensive was a grand gaucherie on the part of Michaels. When you don't have good ushers, a good concert can be ruined in a matter of seconds. Just ask anyone who was at the Allman Brothers - Toy Factory concert at Township last spring. At that particular event, a crowd rushed the stage pushing the band back and ending the concert. There was no real reason for his performance to be of such diminuative duration unless you consider the boocish behavior of certain members of the audience. They kept yelling at Michaels asking him where the organ was - Michaels was playing an am plified piano). Some of the choicer comments screamed at the stage concerned the amount of illicit phar macueticals the screamer had introduced into his bloodstream prior to the concert. Perhaps Michaels was upset because the audience wanted to stomer.. This display of raucousness and lack of sophistication should have been a source of embarrassment to every person at the concert. After a time. Michaels returned and did a song that everyone sang -along to that went "Heighty Ho, Heighty Hi. Everybody's stoned and so am 1." The enthusiasm with which this particular chorus was received said something about the audience. After the song, Michaels left and so did I. To be angry at an audience is one thing. but to show it is quite another. A professional hides his personal feelings and gives the best damned show he can. The amateur stalks off. On the other side of the coin, the audience must have professionalism too, in the sense that they are there to listen to music and not to perform mob tactics. The night was not all bleakness, however. Long John Baldry came on with his 6' 7" frame, played good music and. 'surprise, sur prise.' actually acted as though he was glad to be there. He not only sang, but featured his lead guitarist and his pianist in solos. There is no doubt that Baldry gave a very good show and saved the evening from being a complete bummer. He was great.
