U 44 The University Union Artist Series season of 1971-1972 opens with "Mark Twain Tonightl", that rare event in the theater: a complete illusion of reality. From the moment the seventy-year old Twain shuffles on stage, audiences laugh at his tall stories and wry quips, are moved by his humanity, occasionally squirm at his savage irony - and above all, thrill to the presence of the man himself. For over two hours, in look, in voice, in appearance, and gesture, the creator of Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn lives again. Because of the tremendous enthusiasm last year, Artist Series invited John Chappell, a native of North Carolina, back. Mr. Chappell makes every attempt to assure the most realistic. The make-up alone, which is based on that employed by Hal Holbrook, takes over three hours. The white suit worn is a carefully tailored replica of one Samuel Clemens wore. Finally, the man himself uttering Mark Twain's quotes, such as: "The rumors of my death have been greatly exaggerated" entirely captivate the audience and Mr. Chappell draws you into his dream life of a man who has been dead for over sixty years. The performance will be held on September 20, 1971, at Township Auditorium at 8:00 p.m. Admission lsfreeto U.S.C. Students; tickets may be picked up in the Russell House. Season memberships for the entire U.S.C. Artist Series Programs are $17.50 for adults and $12.50 for students and are available at the University Union, Russell House.
