Michaels coming Friday By BOB CRAFT Feature Editor Lee Michaels and Mandrill will appear Friday evening at the Carolina Coliseum. Michaels, described as "the Ultimate Keyboard Master," uses his instrument and its multi banked amplifiers to translate his sound into physical waves. Michaels has worked from more or less conventional groups to solo performing. Signed by A & M records as an individual artist, he picked up a group to do his first album, "Carnival of Life." He found he disliked work' with a group and dropped them. After another album, he cut the best-selling "Lee Michaels" album in less than seven hours, using the amplified organ as his mainstay. He then went on tour, winning wide critical praise and en thusiastic fans for the show he presented. Backing Michaels Friday is Mandrill, a group from the streets of New York. The group employs organs, guitars and horns. Mandrill draws on Latin American and West Indian cultural roots of its members to form its sound. Someone described Mandrill as not being rock, Latin or jazz but a combination of all three. Tickets for Lee Michaels and Mandrill are on sale at the Coliseum box office for $3.50, $4 and $4.50. INTERNAT] 1031 Assembly Coliseum o beer, wine Beer and wine can now be sold at private functions in the Carolina Coliseum, according to the State Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) Commission. A license for the Golden Spur nightclub in the Russell House has not been con sidered or approved. The Commission granted the license Aug. 6, with the un derstanding that the University make certain stipulations, restrictions and conditions con cerning the sale of beer and wine. The Coliseum management had been obtaining 72 hour brown bagging permits for private func tions. The annual permit is con sidered an easier method. University officials emphasized the permit will not be effective for University activities at the Coliseum such as basketball games, and alcoholic beverages will continue to be illegal at those events. If USC fails to follow the regulations, the commission could refuse to renew the license or fine the school, officials said.
