Morris will be honored by the USC Bands May 9 with a special concert at Carolina Coliseum. USC Band Director Ralph Wahl has invited the public to attend the Mother's Day program which begins at 3 p.m. Five different performing groups--ranging from the Carolina Symphonic Band to the USC Rock Ensemble--will provide a variety of music designed to appeal to a broad range of musical tastes. The USC Wind Ensemble and two jazz ensembles, "Golden Spurs" and "Silver Spurs," round out the performing groups. Morris v bands University that also includes the Carolina Marching Band and the Irish Reds Pep Band. Some 250 students are participating this year in the band program. This concert honoring the governor and lieutenant governor will climax the USC Bands' annual spring tour of South Carolina. "In effect we're inviting the entire state to attend this concert since it honors Gov. West and Lt. Gov. Morris," Wahl said. "We would like to fill Carolina Coliseum for the event." Assisting Wahl with directing the concert will be Pat Wylie, assistant director of bands at USC; Roy Sugden, graduate assistant with the Carolina Bands; and Earle Davis, a senior at Carolina and president of the USC Bands. Service In Town Student c campus r By G LNDA MILLER News Editor At Wednesday's meeting the student senate resolved that the Student Senate encourage each faculty member and student on Wednesday, May 5, 1971, to devote his time to reflection upon the current issues and problems confronting the University com munity and the world. "More specifically, Student Senate encourages each member of the faculty to devote morning class time to discussion of these Issues and to relinquish afternoon class time in order to permit students and faculty alike to participate in Student Government sponsored activities scheduled for that day. These activities shall include a Memorial Service in Rutledge Chapel and Student Faculty Forums on the Russell House patio and in the Commons Room." Senator Gene Gaillard spoke in favor of the resolution and asked the Senate to accept it by ac clamation. Senator Tony Daniels objected to this suggestion and said the Senate might get itself in the same position it did last May without realizing it and requested a roll call vote. The requested roll call vote failed, lacking the necessary ten votes to require a roll call. Senator Gaillard said President Jones and the administration favored the service in memory of the students who died at Kent State University, Jackson State College and South Carolina State College. Miss Fellers said that she felt that next week would be a good time for a march because of all the other activities planned for that week. The group decided that the march would start at the Russell House at 2 p.m. They plan to march down Main Street to the building that formerly housed the UFO Coffeehouse. After a brief assembly, they will march back to campus. The march will end at eigher Maxcy Gregg Park or the Horseshoe. TIhe Horseshoe has been closed for assemblies, unless they are "spontaneous gatherings." Miss Fellers said. "If 500 people spontaneously assemble, they can't do anything." SMC to s to Mayda) Hy RUSTY ROBINSON Staff Writer The Student Mobilization Committee announced plans last night to send a delegation to Washington to participate in the Mayday activities May 1-3. Peter Brown said that one of the pt'imary n&eds of the group was bail money. He said that the group could also use money to "buy candy bars and beer and stuff like that for the troops before we bust through their lines." Eight of the people at the meeting said that they would participate in the activities in Washington. Some of the members that attended the march on Washington last weekend estimated that about 300 students from USC participated. Many of the SMC members will remain in ,News briefs .ODK Univ Tuesday, May 4 is University Day in honor of which all University classes will be suspended after 2 p.m. At this time the Chi Circle of ODK will sponsor the annual Awards Day ceremony to acknowledge the recipients of awards as outstanding students of USC. This year the event is to take place in the Campus Room of the Capstone House. Following the ceremony, ODK will sponsor a banquet for all the ODK members. ODK alumni and their w2ives or dates. Peter Brown said that SMC had applied for a permit to solicit funds at the Spring Thing concerts. He said that the permit had not been approved. but "I feel sure that we'll get it." The group also plans to collect bottles in the dorms and sell them to help raise money. Brown added that the demon strators in Washington would not initiate violence. He said that the plan was for "the biggest rock concert this country has ever seen." The activities include a rock concert May I and a soul concert May 2. The group plans to stop all traffic into Washington May :3 and 4. Brown said that the plan was simple. POST OFFICE NEEDS HELP The University Post Office needs your help. It is approaching the end of the semester and many students leave without giving the Post Office a change of address. The biggest problem is with magazines, book clubs and record club subscriptions and newspapers. The Post Office suggests that you send these publishers a change of address now if you are not going to be here this summer. It takes them four to six weeks to make a change of address.
