AL 3-4641 brief goes toj "IRISH RKDS" TO BOOST SPIRIT "Irish Reds" is the name of the new-look pep band that will provide spirited music during 1970. 71 at USC basketball games. The 43-piece organization sponsored by Phi Mu Alpha Sin fonia fraternity and the USC Bands is directed by Pat Wylie. Members of the group came up with the name "Irish Reds" from a 20th century American gamecock noted for its spirit and tenacity. Students said the name relates to the school symbol, reflects the spirit of the band and, as a pure coincidence, might even be pleasing to Frank McGuire. The "Irish Reds" membership is drawn from the USC bands and includes some of the top musicians at Carolina. Sinfonia members active in the band program form the core of the "Irish Reds." Besides playing at home basketball games, the group ap pears at pep rallies, visiting team receptions, and other special events. The "Irish Reds" have a a wide repertoire of music, but concentrate on current popular themes.. AL,UMNI PRESIDENT NEAMED William N. Bowen of Columbia, executive vice-president of the S. C. Savings and Loan League, has been elected president of the University of South Carolina Alumni Association for 1971. Bowen, a 1956 graduate of USC, was selected by the Alumni Council to succeed Douglas K. Sturkie Jr., also of Columbia. The new president, who will assume office January 1, is a former director of alumni ac tivities at USC. serving from 1958 to 1960. He was assistant treasurer at the University 1956-58. The 10-12a.m. affair honors Mrs. James M. Dabbs and John H. McGra 1. Mrs. Dabbs is editor of "Face of an Island," a book of selected photographs made on South Carolina's St. Helena Island in the early 1900's. McGrail, photography instructor in the College of Journalism and former chief photographer of the State Record, cleaned and restored the glass plates and printed the photographs that make up the book. Research by Mrs. Dabbe who was studying the history of St. Helena when the plates were found has revealed that the photographs were taken by Leigh Richmond Miner, a former director of the art department of Hampton Institute, Va.. who had visited St. Helena Island and recorded the life there.
