A man was found on the 8th floor
of South Building last Tuesday
night. He said he was in the wrong
building. Right on.

We attended a WUSC "Make It
or Break It" session with P.D.
Orlando Orlando one night last
week. Orlando decides which
records are played on the air in
this way: he stands at one end of
the WUSC office with a stack of
records, and he throws each record
at the opposite wall. If the record
doesn't break on impact, he'll play
it no matter who it's by. And if it
smashes.. tough luck, no matter
who it's by.

members dashed off in search of
what they thought might turn out
to be a bombing. When they
arrived. they found that the "hot
news story" was that Naval ROTC
students had placed "Fly Navy"

Force ROTC building.

"IRISH RKDS" TO BOOST
SPIRIT
"Irish Reds" is the name of the
new-look pep band that will
provide spirited music during 1970.
71 at USC basketball games.
The 43-piece organization
sponsored by Phi Mu Alpha Sin
fonia fraternity and the USC Bands
is directed by Pat Wylie.
Members of the group came up
with the name "Irish Reds" from a
20th century American gamecock
noted for its spirit and tenacity.
Students said the name relates to
the school symbol, reflects the
spirit of the band and, as a pure
coincidence, might even be
pleasing to Frank McGuire.
The "Irish Reds" membership is
drawn from the USC bands and
includes some of the top musicians
at Carolina. Sinfonia members
active in the band program form
the core of the "Irish Reds."
Besides playing at home
basketball games, the group ap
pears at pep rallies, visiting team
receptions, and other special
events. The "Irish Reds" have a a
wide repertoire of music, but
concentrate on current popular
themes..

William N. Bowen of Columbia,
executive vice-president of the S.
C. Savings and Loan League, has
been elected president of the
University of South Carolina
Alumni Association for 1971.
Bowen, a 1956 graduate of USC,
was selected by the Alumni
Council to succeed Douglas K.
Sturkie Jr., also of Columbia.
The new president, who will
assume office January 1, is a
former director of alumni ac
tivities at USC. serving from 1958
to 1960. He was assistant treasurer
at the University 1956-58.

panes" and the man who
discovered the "panes" to be glass
photographic negatives will be
honored at a drop-in Friday at the
University of South Carolina
College of Journalism.
The 10-12a.m. affair honors Mrs.
James M. Dabbs and John H.
McGra 1. Mrs. Dabbs is editor of
"Face of an Island," a book of
selected photographs made on
South Carolina's St. Helena Island
in the early 1900's. McGrail,
photography instructor in the
College of Journalism and former
chief photographer of the State
Record, cleaned and restored the
glass plates and printed the
photographs that make up the
book.

during remodeling of a building on
St. Helenar Island near Beaufert.
Research by Mrs. Dabbe who
was studying the history of St.
Helena when the plates were found
has revealed that the photographs
were taken by Leigh Richmond
Miner, a former director of the art
department of Hampton Institute,
Va.. who had visited St. Helena
Island and recorded the life there.

'rhe Department of Chemistry at
USC has received a $14,940 grant
from the National Science
SFoundation to conduct a program
of research for college teachers
next summer.
The program is designed to
provide teachers in four-year
colleges where research facilities
are limited with the opportunity
for research under the direction of
scientists at the University.

Mrs. Patricia G. McNeely, a
reporter for The Columbia Record,
has been named 1970 Journalist of
the Year by the USC chapter of
'heta Sigma Phi, professional
communications organization for
women.
Mrs. McNeely received the
award at a presentations
ceremony today (Dec. 8) at USC's
Capstone House.
In honoring Mrs. McNeely.
Theta Sigma Phi praised her
reporting. particularly in the areas
of education and politics. The
organization said Mrs. McNeely
has received approximately 36
awards since 1961 for her repor
ting.
